Tomas
E. Carbonell, who will graduate from North Carolina
State University this month with degrees in chemical
engineering, economics
and multidisciplinary
studies, has been awarded a 2003 Marshall
Scholarship.
The
Raleigh resident will use the scholarship - which
includes university fees, cost of living expenses,
an annual book grant, thesis grant, research and
daily travel grants, and fares to and from the
United States - to pursue dual master's degrees
in economics for development and in environmental
change and management from Oxford University beginning
in the fall of 2003.
Carbonell
is the only Marshall Scholar recipient representing
a North Carolina institution and one of just 40
recipients nationwide from a field of 962 applicants.
He received his scholarship through the Atlanta
region, which interviewed 21 candidates from a
field of 115 applicants.

The
Marshall Scholarship is awarded to selected U.S. students
with at least a 3.7 GPA who wish to pursue advanced
degree studies in Britain. It is named after George
C. Marshall, who stated that "a close accord between
our two countries is essential to the good of mankind
in this turbulent world of today, and that is not possible
without an intimate understanding of each other."
The
Marshall Scholarship was the second elite scholarship
earned by Carbonell. Earlier this year, he was also
selected as a Truman
Scholar, and will use that scholarship after completing
his studies at Oxford.
Carbonell
graduated from William G. Enloe High School in Raleigh
in 1998. He is the son of Dr. Ruben G. and Augustina
Carbonell of 6105 Godfrey Drive, Raleigh. Ruben Carbonell
is director of the Kenan Institute at NC State.
At
NC State, Carbonell maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while
earning three degrees. His multidisciplinary studies
major centered on international political economy and
the environment. A Park
Scholar, Carbonell also earned a minor in Spanish.
At the same time, he was involved in many student activities.
Carbonell was co-founder and served as editor-in-chief
of "Americana,"
an online student publication. He served as special
assistant to the student body president and co-chair
of the Issues
and Ideas Committee of the Union Activities Board.
Carbonell
has completed internships with the Center
for International Environmental Law and the international
program of Environmental
Defense in Washington, D.C., the Sandia
National Laboratories in Livermore, Calif., and
the U.S.
House of Representatives. Last year, Carbonell attended
a session of the United Nations climate change negotiations
in Marrakech, Morocco.
Among
his many community service activities, Carbonell has
served as a volunteer tutor for Hispanic children at
the Central YMCA and St. Raphael's Elementary School
in Raleigh. He previously worked on Habitat
for Humanity projects in the Dominican Republic
and Guatemala. He is also an Eagle Scout, and has run
half-marathons in Raleigh, Asheville and San Francisco.
Before
attending Oxford, Carbonell will return to Guatemala
this spring to serve as a volunteer coordinator for
Habitat for Humanity, then will work this summer as
an intern in the Environment and Natural Resources division
of the U.S.
Department of Justice.
