NC State Names New, Reappointed Trustees

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At its meeting in Chapel Hill on March 21, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved the following new appointments and reappointments to the Board of Trustees of North Carolina State University. Appointments of new trustees are provisional, and are contingent on completion of a University of North Carolina Office of the President mandatory orientation.

Appointed to a first four-year term:

  • Robert B. Jordan III of Mount Gilead, N.C. – A 1954 graduate of NC State’s College of Natural Resources, Jordan is a member of one of North Carolina’s most active, civic-minded families. He has served as lieutenant governor of North Carolina and was instrumental in the decision to establish the Natural Resources Research Center at NC State. He is President of Jordan Lumber & Supply and serves as a member of the College of Management Board of Advisors. He is a recipient of NC State’s prestigious Watauga Medal, awarded by the Board of Trustees to honor persons who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the university. He replaces Ed Hood, who served two four-year terms on the board.
  • Cassius S. Williams of New Bern, N.C. – A 1969 graduate of NC State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Williams is a State Farm Insurance agent in Greenville, N.C. He has served two terms as president of the Board of Directors of the NC State Alumni Association, and currently chairs the Alumni Association’s Building Committee. He has served the university on the Wolfpack Club Board of Directors, the Park Scholars Selection Committee, and the Executive Committee of the NC State Foundation.

Williams had been appointed by the Board of Governors at its February meeting to fill the unexpired term of Vernon Malone, who resigned his seat on the board after his election to the North Carolina Senate. Williams will now serve a four-year term.
Reappointed to a second four-year term:
  • Ann B. Goodnight of Cary, N.C. – A 1968 graduate (with honors) of NC State’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Goodnight handles community relations at SAS Institute, the nation’s largest private software company, founded by her husband, Dr. James H. Goodnight. She is the founder of Cary Academy private school in Cary, and is an active volunteer in the Triangle community. She serves on NC State’s Capital Campaign Executive Committee and also played a leadership role in the Campaign for NC State Students.
  • Wendell H. Murphy of Rose Hill, N.C. – A 1960 graduate of NC State’s College of Education, Murphy founded and is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of MurFam Enterprises, L.L.C. He previously served on the NC State Board of Trustees in 1993, but resigned to accept an appointment to the Centennial Authority. Mr. Murphy served in the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1983 to 1988, and in the state Senate from 1989 to 1992. He is a recipient of NC State’s prestigious Watauga Medal, awarded by the Board of Trustees to honor persons who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the university. Murphy is a member of NC State’s Capital Campaign Executive Committee.

In welcoming the new and reappointed trustees, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox said, “The NC State community joins me in congratulating our new and returning members of the Board of Trustees. We look forward to working together to advance NC State as one of the nation’s finest higher education institutions.”
