State Names New, Reappointed Trustees
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
At
its meeting in Chapel Hill on March 21, the University
of North Carolina Board of Governors approved the following
new appointments and reappointments to the Board of
Trustees of North Carolina State University. Appointments
of new trustees are provisional, and are contingent
on completion of a University of North Carolina Office
of the President mandatory orientation.
Appointed
to a first four-year term:
- Robert
B. Jordan III of Mount Gilead, N.C. – A 1954
graduate of NC State’s College
of Natural Resources, Jordan is a member of one
of North Carolina’s most active, civic-minded
families. He has served as lieutenant governor of
North Carolina and was instrumental in the decision
to establish the Natural Resources Research Center
at NC State. He is President of Jordan Lumber &
Supply and serves as a member of the College of Management
Board of Advisors. He is a recipient of NC State’s
prestigious Watauga Medal, awarded by the Board of
Trustees to honor persons who have made significant
contributions to the advancement of the university.
He replaces Ed Hood, who served two four-year terms
on the board.
- Cassius
S. Williams of New Bern, N.C. – A 1969 graduate
of NC State’s College
of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Williams is
a State Farm Insurance agent in Greenville, N.C. He
has served two terms as president of the Board of
Directors of the NC State Alumni Association, and
currently chairs the Alumni Association’s Building
Committee. He has served the university on the Wolfpack
Club Board of Directors, the Park Scholars Selection
Committee, and the Executive Committee of the NC State
Foundation.
Williams
had been appointed by the Board of Governors at its
February meeting to fill the unexpired term of Vernon
Malone, who resigned his seat on the board after his
election to the North Carolina Senate. Williams will
now serve a four-year term.
Reappointed to a second four-year term:
- Ann
B. Goodnight of Cary, N.C. – A 1968 graduate
(with honors) of NC State’s College
of Humanities and Social Sciences, Goodnight handles
community relations at SAS Institute, the nation’s
largest private software company, founded by her husband,
Dr. James H. Goodnight. She is the founder of Cary
Academy private school in Cary, and is an active volunteer
in the Triangle community. She serves on NC State’s
Capital Campaign Executive Committee and also played
a leadership role in the Campaign for NC State Students.
- Wendell
H. Murphy of Rose Hill, N.C. – A 1960 graduate
of NC State’s College
of Education, Murphy founded and is chairman of
the board and chief executive officer of MurFam Enterprises,
L.L.C. He previously served on the NC State Board
of Trustees in 1993, but resigned to accept an appointment
to the Centennial Authority. Mr. Murphy served in
the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1983
to 1988, and in the state Senate from 1989 to 1992.
He is a recipient of NC State’s prestigious
Watauga Medal, awarded by the Board of Trustees to
honor persons who have made significant contributions
to the advancement of the university. Murphy is a
member of NC State’s Capital Campaign Executive
Committee.
In welcoming the new and reappointed trustees, Chancellor
Marye Anne Fox said, “The NC State community joins
me in congratulating our new and returning members of
the Board of Trustees. We look forward to working together
to advance NC State as one of the nation’s finest
higher education institutions.”
