State University Students Garner Goldwater Scholarships

Two
North Carolina State University students have
won prestigious Goldwater Scholarships for the
2003-04 academic year.
Melissa
M. Adams of North Wilkesboro, a senior
majoring in zoology
and multidisciplinary
studies, and Justin S. Brockman of
Shelby, a sophomore majoring in physics
and applied
mathematics, have received Goldwater Scholarships.
The awards are based on academic merit and cover
the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and
board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
Jeffrey
R. Millman of Oriental, a junior majoring
in chemical
engineering, received honorable mention.

Nationwide,
a total of 300 Goldwater Scholars were selected
this year from a field of 1,093 students in
the fields of mathematics, science and engineering.
Scholars are nominated by faculties of colleges
and universities and selected by the board of
trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
and Excellence in Education Foundation, a federally
endowed agency established in 1986 to foster
and encourage outstanding students to pursue
careers in mathematics, the natural sciences
and engineering.
Adams
is the daughter of Michael and Molly Adams of
1739 Mountain View Road in North Wilkesboro.
She graduated in 1999 from North Wilkes High
School in Hays. At NC State, she is a Thomas
Jefferson Scholar and member of Phi Beta Kappa,
the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Honors Program, and the University Scholars
Program. Last summer, she completed a research
project in marine biology through the National
Science Foundation Research Undergraduate Experience
program at the University of Alaska-Southeast.

A teaching assistant in biochemistry
at NC State, Adams plans to attain a Ph.D. in endocrinology
or toxicology and teach and conduct research in an academic
setting.
Brockman is the son of Steven and Jacqueline
Brockman of 186 Appian Way in Shelby. He graduated from
the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics in 2001.
At NC State, he is a Park Scholar and National Merit
Scholar.
Brockman hopes to earn a Ph.D. in quantum
physics and devote his research to making the quantum
computer a reality.
Millman, the honorable mention, hopes
to earn a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and conduct
research in colloidal science and nanotechnology.
