Nationwide, a total of 300 Goldwater Scholars were selected this year from a field of 1,093 students in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering. Scholars are nominated by faculties of colleges and universities and selected by the board of trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, a federally endowed agency established in 1986 to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Adams is the daughter of Michael and Molly Adams of 1739 Mountain View Road in North Wilkesboro. She graduated in 1999 from North Wilkes High School in Hays. At NC State, she is a Thomas Jefferson Scholar and member of Phi Beta Kappa, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Honors Program, and the University Scholars Program. Last summer, she completed a research project in marine biology through the National Science Foundation Research Undergraduate Experience program at the University of Alaska-Southeast.

A teaching assistant in biochemistry at NC State, Adams plans to attain a Ph.D. in endocrinology or toxicology and teach and conduct research in an academic setting.

Brockman is the son of Steven and Jacqueline Brockman of 186 Appian Way in Shelby. He graduated from the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics in 2001. At NC State, he is a Park Scholar and National Merit Scholar.

Brockman hopes to earn a Ph.D. in quantum physics and devote his research to making the quantum computer a reality.

Millman, the honorable mention, hopes to earn a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and conduct research in colloidal science and nanotechnology.
