NC State Honors Departing Trustees With Page Awards

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Departing members of the North Carolina State University Board of Trustees have been honored with Walter Hines Page Awards for their service to the university and the board. Edward E. Hood, W. Steven Edwards and Michael D. Anthony accepted the awards in a ceremony on Thursday, April 17. Vernon Malone received the award in November 2002, when he stepped down after his election to the N.C. State Senate.

“They’re true friends of the university,” said Peaches Gunter Blank, chair of the board, “and their leadership and foresight are reflected in NC State’s many achievements during their tenures.”

Hood, Stevens and Malone each served two four-year terms on the Board of Trustees. Anthony has served as the student member of the board and president of the student body since May 2002.

Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, speaking on behalf of alumni, faculty, staff and students, said, “The entire NC State community is grateful for the strong guidance and dedicated service that Ed, Steve, Vernon and Michael have provided to the university. They’ve been unwavering in their commitment to excellence and tenacious in their drive to move NC State to prominence in teaching, research and extension. We will miss their wisdom and their energy on the Board of Trustees.”

Hood, of Banner Elk, N.C. and North Palm Beach, Fla., is a former vice chairman and executive officer with General Electric. He earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nuclear engineering at NC State, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. A native of Jonesville, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from NC State in 1994.

Edwards, a native of Raleigh, is a former building-supply executive and vice president of Carolina Builders Corp. He received a bachelor’s degree in business management at NC State, and served on the board of directors of the university’s Student Aid Association, also known as the Wolfpack Club.

Malone, of Raleigh, resigned his seat on the board earlier this year after his election to the North Carolina Senate in January. A former superintendent of The Governor Morehead School, he also served as chairman of the Wake County Board of Education and of the Wake County Board of Commissioners.

Anthony, a native of Charlotte, is a senior in business management and plans to pursue a master’s degree in public administration following graduation this May.
