Sniper-Case
Police Chief Highlights “Integrity Week”
at NC State
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Charles
A. Moose, former chief of the Montgomery County (Md.)
police, most noted for his role in the Washington, D.C.-area
sniper cases, will be the keynote speaker for Academic
Integrity Week events on the North Carolina State University
campus.
Sponsored by the Student
Judicial Board and the Center
for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service,
the series of discussions, films and lectures is intended
to emphasize the role of honor and honesty in student
campus life. Activities will be held from Monday, Nov.
3, through Wednesday, Nov. 5, at different locations
around campus.
According to Sean Casey, student chief justice at NC
State, “The idea is that in a 21st century society
where succeeding at all costs is glorified – with
consequences such as pyramid schemes, cheating and ‘get-rich-quick’
scams – we need to bring back awareness of the
importance of integrity and ethical decision-making
among college students.” While other institutions
rely on honor codes, said Casey, “we believe that
proper education is a better solution.”
Moose, who gained nationwide attention for his handling
of the serial sniper attacks on residents of Maryland
and Virginia in October of last year, has since resigned
his post as police chief and has written a book, “Three
Weeks in October,” about the killings, the manhunt,
and the capture of the suspects.
Academic Integrity Week includes these scheduled events:
- Ethics
Bowl and panel discussion, 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday in
Caldwell Lounge. Two finalist teams will compete with
prepared case studies to win a $150 prize. (Team applications
are available in the Student Government office.) A
panel discussion featuring Tony Caravano, student
body president, Lee Fowler, the university’s
athletics director, and others, will follow.
- The
film “The Emperor’s Club” and discussion,
7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, in 2215 Williams Hall.
After watching the film, participants will discuss
the role of ethics in academics and student life.
- Keynote
speech by Charles A. Moose, 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
Nov. 5, in Witherspoon Student Cinema, followed by
a question-and-answer session.
