Statement from Chief Younce: Officer Riley to Return to Regular Duties

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

As a result of an internal review concerning the death of Brandon Burnett on the evening of November 2, 2003, I have returned Officer Renee Riley to regular duties effective November 10, 2003.

The presumption of the cause of death is a drug overdose. The final results and confirmation of the amount of drugs in Mr. Burnett’s system at the time of his death will come from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiners and the final autopsy report will be available within the next sixty to ninety days. The State Bureau of Investigation is in the process of completing its investigation and their results will be forwarded to the Wake District Attorney’s office.

I have reviewed the transcripts of the radio traffic that night, and I am confident that our officers conducted them professionally and did the right thing on that evening.
