Dr. Jo Allen of Raleigh has been named interim vice provost for the Division of Undergraduate Affairs at North Carolina State University, effective Nov. 19, 2003. Allen has served the Division since 1999 as assistant and then associate vice provost.

NC State’s Division of Undergraduate Affairs promotes excellence and effectiveness in undergraduate education. The Division is charged with the development of a coherent vision for undergraduate education, coordination of academic policy and curricular programming, and the strengthening of all academic support programs.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to enhance our work and our relationships with all our partners across campus,” Allen said. “Everything we do is about giving undergraduate students the richest academic options and opportunities as they work to earn the diploma they will cherish for a lifetime.”

Allen is a tenured associate professor in the Department of English, and serves as president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing, the largest international scholarly organization of technical communication academics. She maintains an active research agenda, with more than 100 refereed articles, books, and presentations on various topics related to technical and professional communication and to higher education administration. She has served as editorial reviewer or journal board member for four scholarly journals.

In 1997-98, Allen was named American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow and served a year with President John Casteen III at the University of Virginia. She is a member of the executive committee of the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association and a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

The native of LaGrange, N.C., received her bachelor’s degree in English from Meredith College, her master’s in English from East Carolina University, and her Ph.D. in English from Oklahoma State University, where she was a Clinton Keeler Fellow and the recipient of the International Society for Technical Communication Scholarship.

Allen replaces Dr. James A. Anderson, who is now vice president and associate provost for institutional assessment and diversity at Texas A&M University. He will also be a tenured professor in psychology.
