Dr.
Jo Allen of Raleigh has been named interim vice provost
for the Division of Undergraduate Affairs at North Carolina
State University, effective Nov. 19, 2003. Allen has
served the Division since 1999 as assistant and then
associate vice provost.

State’s Division of Undergraduate Affairs promotes
excellence and effectiveness in undergraduate education.
The Division is charged with the development of a coherent
vision for undergraduate education, coordination of
academic policy and curricular programming, and the
strengthening of all academic support programs.
“I
am very excited to have the opportunity to enhance our
work and our relationships with all our partners across
campus,” Allen said. “Everything we do is
about giving undergraduate students the richest academic
options and opportunities as they work to earn the diploma
they will cherish for a lifetime.”
Allen is a tenured associate professor in the Department
of English, and serves as president of the Association
of Teachers of Technical Writing, the largest international
scholarly organization of technical communication academics.
She maintains an active research agenda, with more than
100 refereed articles, books, and presentations on various
topics related to technical and professional communication
and to higher education administration. She has served
as editorial reviewer or journal board member for four
scholarly journals.
In
1997-98, Allen was named American Council on Education
(ACE) Fellow and served a year with President John Casteen
III at the University of Virginia. She is a member of
the executive committee of the North Carolina Literary
and Historical Association and a member of Phi Kappa
Phi.
The
native of LaGrange, N.C., received her bachelor’s
degree in English from Meredith College, her master’s
in English from East Carolina University, and her Ph.D.
in English from Oklahoma State University, where she
was a Clinton Keeler Fellow and the recipient of the
International Society for Technical Communication Scholarship.
Allen
replaces Dr. James A. Anderson, who is now vice president
and associate provost for institutional assessment and
diversity at Texas A&M University. He will also
be a tenured professor in psychology.
