Seventeen NC State Students Receive Military Commissions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Seventeen North Carolina State University students received commissions in the U.S. armed forces at a joint Air Force-Army-Navy-Marine Corps Ceremony held Dec. 19 in the Talley Student Center.

Five students received U.S. Navy commissions, seven students received U.S. Air Force commissions, two students received U.S. Army commissions and three students received U.S. Marine Corps commissions.

Captain Carlton Puryear Jr., professor of naval science, presided over the ceremony. Opening remarks were provided by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. The keynote speaker was Maj. Gen. Robert Flanagan of the United States Marine Corps. Flanagan is the commanding general of the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point. Oaths of office were administered by Flanagan; Lt. Col. Michael Wawrzyniak, professor of military science; and Col. Jeffery Webb, professor of aerospace studies.

The 17 commissioned officers received bachelor’s degrees earlier in the day at NC State Commencement ceremonies. ROTC cadets receive commissions upon completion of their degree requirements.

NORTH CAROLINA
JACKSONVILLE – Robert Elton Peterson, electrical engineering, is the husband of Nanette Peterson and the son of Mark and Rena Peterson.

INDIANA
GREENVILLE – James Aaron Roberts, electrical engineering, is the husband of Christina Roberts and the son of Larry and Alice Roberts.

PENNSYLVANIA
WASHINGTON – Mark Robert Kifer, biology, is the son of Robert Kifer and Alison Chunko.

Following is information about U.S. Air Force second lieutenants from NC State, including academic majors, hometowns, and names of parents and/or spouses:

NORTH CAROLINA
BURLINGTON – Lucas Matthew Layman, textile and apparel management, is the son of Matt and Linza Layman.
MIDLAND – Randy Raymond Clark, Jr., applied mathematics and meteorology, is the son of Randy and Linda Clark.
NEWTON – Christopher Sean Wireman, meteorology, is the son of Dudley and Cathy Wireman.
ROCKY MOUNT – Kelly Ann Shaw, business management, is the daughter of Ed and Ann Parker.
ROUGEMONT – Nicholas Patrick Carden, civil engineering, is the son of Steven and Patricia Carden.
SALISBURY – Abraham Jerome Washington, economics, is the son of Abraham and Patti Washington.

SOUTH CAROLINA
SUMTER – Jesse Douglas Cash, business management, is the son of Troy and Kim Cash.

NORTH CAROLINA
FUQUAY-VARINA – Neal Anthony Manning, political science, is the son of Howard and Sarah Manning.

NEW YORK
PELHAM MANOR – Jennifer Marie Ernest, history, is the daughter of Thomas and Patricia Ernest.

Following is information about U.S. Marine Corps second lieutenants from NC State, including academic majors, hometowns, and names of parents and/or spouses:

NORTH CAROLINA
WILSON – Christopher Michael DeMars, technology education, is the son of William and Teresa DeMars.

MARYLAND
BOWIE – Charles Ryland Drennan, business management, is the son of William Drennan and Laurie and Edward Tillet.
FREDERICK – Jason Howard Bane, business management, is the husband of Veronica Bane and the son of John Bane and Peggy and Gene Kretzer.
