Issues in Higher Education” Founder to Celebrate ‘Creative
Genius’
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Frank L.
Matthews, co-founder and publisher of “Black
Issues in Higher Education,” will help North
Carolina State University’s African-American
Cultural Center kick off its 2004 fall series of programs,
which is themed “Changing the Landscape of Society:
African-American Creative Genius.”
Matthews
will deliver a public lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 28,
from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Campus Cinema in
Witherspoon Student Center, which is located at the
corner of Dan Allen Drive and Cates Avenue on the NC
State campus. The event is free and open to the public.
A reception will follow Matthews’ speech. Matthews
will also be available for interviews on Wednesday,
Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. in room 126 of the NC State African-American
Cultural Center, located in the Witherspoon Student
Center.
“Throughout this academic year, change agents
whose work influences our lives will visit our campus
to engage our students, staff, faculty, and community
guests in conversations about their work and their
lives,” said Janet Howard, interim director of
the African-American Cultural Center. “We know
and recognize some of the great pioneers of the past,
and we want to talk with scholars whose accomplishments
are making a difference now.”
In addition
to “Black Issues in Higher Education,” Matthews
also publishes “Community College Week,” a
national, semi-monthly publication that covers community,
junior and technical college education issues. He is
also co-founder of Cox, Matthews and Associates, a
Fairfax, Va., communications company.
Matthews is also a faculty member at George Mason
University, where he teaches in the School of Law and
School of Management. In July 1988, Matthews was named
senior scholar in the Center for Policy Studies in
Education at George Mason. He has also served as past
president of the American Business Law Association
for the Mid-Atlantic Region and the National Association
of College and University Attorneys. Matthews also
serves or has served on the boards of the Citizens
Bank of Virginia, Resources for the Future, Scholarship
Fund of Alexandria, the Clemson University Honors College,
and Blacks in Philanthropy, as well as other organizations.
Matthews
received his bachelor’s degree in political
science from Clemson University in 1971. He later earned
a master’s in business administration and a law
degree from the University of South Carolina in 1976. -
