Dr. Stephen
S. Kelley has been named head of North Carolina State
University’s Department of Wood
and Paper Science.
Prior to joining the department, Kelley was the principal
scientist for the Department of Energy (DOE) National
Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colo.
Kelley joined NREL as a research chemist in 1992.
During his tenure with the NREL, Kelley also served
as an adjunct professor in the Department of Forest
Products at the University of Tennessee, and at Oregon
State University. His industrial experience includes
senior research chemist positions at both Eastman Kodak
in Kingsport, Tenn., and Bend Research Inc. in Bend,
Ore.
“I’m delighted that Dr. Kelley has joined
the College of Natural Resources. His expertise and
experience will be invaluable to the Department of
Wood and Paper Science,” says Interim Dean J.B.
Jett. “With the department changing to meet the
needs of a rapidly globalizing industry through innovative
research, outreach and education programs, his leadership
and commitment to faculty, staff and students, plus
his results-oriented approach, will assist this department
in achieving even greater levels of success.”
Kelley is a Fellow of the International Academy of
Wood Science, the American Chemical Society, the Forest
Products Society, the North American Membrane Society,
and the Society of Wood, Science and Technology. He
is the past chair of the Cellulose and Renewable Material
Division of the American Chemical Society and has been
active with non-profit organizations working on education,
conservation and affordable housing issues. In 2003,
he received the NREL Award for Technology Transfer.
Kelley received
his bachelor’s degree from Oregon
State University in 1978, and a Ph.D. in chemistry
from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1986. - peake -
