Dr. Edward L. Kick has been named head of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at North Carolina State University, effective Sept. 1. The department is housed jointly in NC State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Kick comes to NC State from Middle Tennessee State University, where he served as professor and chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology from 1999 to 2005. Before joining Middle Tennessee State, he held a variety of positions at the University of Utah, most recently as professor and chair of the Department of Sociology.

Kick won a number of teaching awards at the University of Utah, including the university’s “Superior Teaching Award” for five consecutive years. He also received a prestigious Fulbright Lecture and Research Award in 1987 and was a finalist in 1999 for the Social and Behavioral Sciences Superior Researcher Award. Kick is a distinguished professor-consultant for Moscow State University in Russia and book review editor for the Journal of World-System Research.

“Dr. Kick brings to this position a wealth of administrative experience, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and a prolific record of work in his field,” said Dr. Johnny Wynne, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “He will be a tremendous leader for the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.”

“We are delighted that Ed Kick has joined us,” said Dr. Linda P. Brady, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. “He brings extensive administrative experience and a global research agenda to one of CHASS’s largest departments.”

Kick earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin, and master’s and doctoral degrees in sociology from Indiana University.
