Dr. Edward L. Kick has been named head of the Department
of Sociology and Anthropology at North Carolina State
University, effective Sept. 1. The department is housed
jointly in NC State’s College of Agriculture and
Life Sciences and College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Kick comes to NC State from Middle Tennessee State University,
where he served as professor and chair of the Department
of Sociology and Anthropology from 1999 to 2005. Before
joining Middle Tennessee State, he held a variety of
positions at the University of Utah, most recently as
professor and chair of the Department of Sociology.
Kick won a number of teaching awards at the University
of Utah, including the university’s “Superior
Teaching Award” for five consecutive years. He
also received a prestigious Fulbright Lecture and Research
Award in 1987 and was a finalist in 1999 for the Social
and Behavioral Sciences Superior Researcher Award. Kick
is a distinguished professor-consultant for Moscow State
University in Russia and book review editor for the
Journal of World-System Research.

administrative experience, a strong commitment to excellence
in teaching and a prolific record of work in his field,”
said Dr. Johnny Wynne, dean of the College of Agriculture
and Life Sciences. “He will be a tremendous leader
for the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.”

said Dr. Linda P. Brady, dean of the College of Humanities
and Social Sciences. “He brings extensive administrative
experience and a global research agenda to one of CHASS’s
largest departments.”
Kick earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from
the University of Wisconsin, and master’s and
doctoral degrees in sociology from Indiana University.
