Skills

shown by NC State College of Design students.

Some
of the Triangle’s most creative young designers
will get into the Halloween spirit this weekend, unleashing
their artistic talents by carving jack-o’-lanterns
and showcasing imaginative costumes at the College of
Design’s annual pumpkin-carving contest and Halloween
Bash.
Media coverage of both events is welcomed.
The pumpkin-carving contest is scheduled for Friday,
Oct. 28, at 5 p.m. and will take place at Kamphoefner
Courtyard on the NC State campus. The courtyard is located
behind Brooks Hall off Pullen Road. The contest is open
to College of Design students – and any brave
media representatives – on a first-come, first-carved
basis. Contestants will have up to 40 minutes to complete
their jack-o’-lanterns, which will be judged by
Marvin Malecha, dean of the College of Design, and faculty
members Vince Foote and Brian Lafitte. The top three
designs will receive prizes.
The finished jack-o’-lanterns will be lit and
displayed at the college’s annual Halloween Bash
on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. The bash is
a celebration of the students’ creative and sometimes
outrageously designed costumes, which will be judged
beginning at 11 p.m. The theme of this year’s
bash is “Pandemonium at the Grocery Store.”
The finished jack-o’-lanterns and costumes are
always creative and often are elaborate, providing great
photo and feature story opportunities for Halloween
coverage. Students may also be willing to provide some
last-minute pumpkin-carving and costume tips.
Both the pumpkin-carving contest and the Halloween Bash
are sponsored by the student-run NC State University
Design Council.
