NC State to Hold Disaster Preparedness Workshop for Animal Owners

Protecting and caring for pets and other animals before, during and after severe weather is the focus of a workshop being held by North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) on Saturday, Aug. 26.
The “Disaster Preparedness for Animal Owners” workshop, which begins with an 8:30 a.m. registration and ends at 4 p.m., is sponsored by the CVM Animal Welfare, Ethics and Public Policy Program and is part of a public education series offered by the college’s Office of Continuing Education and Outreach.
A fee of $30 provides workshop participants with six one-hour sessions, a take-home proceedings manual and lunch. Topics include behavioral issues affecting animals in a disaster situation and general first aid for small animals.
All session leaders are veterinarians and include Dr. Margaret Gruen, animal behavior resident; Dr. Barbara Sherman Simpson, specialist in veterinary behavior; Dr. Kelli Ferris, co-founder of the North Carolina State Animal Response Team (SART); Dr. Steve Marks, director of the CVM Small Animal Emergency Clinic; and Dr. Dianne Dunning, director of the Animal Welfare, Ethics and Public Policy Program.
