Academic Coaching

In Spring 2007, the Office of Advising Support, Information and Services (OASIS) implemented an Academic Coaching Program for Pack Promise Scholars. Academic coaches provide a personalized and effective means of supporting the success of Pack Promise Scholars, and do so by:

  • Providing support and encouragement
  • Identifying and promoting campus resources, information and materials that assist in their transition to NC State University
  • Connecting students with co-curricular activities and other engagement opportunities that will assist with their academic and social integration
  • Providing guidance, feedback and responses to student questions and directing students to the appropriate resources or personnel
  • Helping students develop, prioritize and focus on their goals
  • Holding students accountable for following through on their plans
  • Helping students to establish and maintain systems and structures that can support them throughout the academic year.

Want to become an
Academic Coach?

OASIS is actively seeking faculty, staff, and graduate students to volunteer as Academic Coaches to Pack Promise students.

Training Academic Coaches

All coaches participate in an initial training session which focuses on the program expectations, guidelines, and processes. Regularly scheduled group training sessions take place throughout the academic year and are driven by the coaches’ needs. The Director of OASIS, Coordinator of the Academic Coaching Program and outside consultants handle the training responsibilities.

The Role of the Academic Coach

Coaching is a collaborative, problem-solving process that helps people make and maintain life changes. It is a creative method for helping individuals focus on their talents, resources and strengths so that they are successful in achieving their academic and personal goals.

Academic coaches may conduct business by telephone, email or in person. Some coaches choose weekly sessions, although it may be decided that coaches speak with their students more or less frequently, depending on the students’ needs.

Together, academic coaches and their students will determine the areas on which they will work throughout the semester.
