Academic and Career Advising
Description: |
This workshop will address the importance of integrating academic and career advising. Learn how advisers can guide students through the exploratory and decision-making process using various tools, resources and personnel available at NC Sate University. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will be more aware of career development theories and decision-making.
- Participants will learn about the importance of integrating academic study with related, work-based learning.
- Participants will increase their understanding of what employers are looking for when hiring new graduates .
- Participants will be able to identify and access advising resources, including information related to careers and selection of majors.

Academic Enrichment Opportunities for Students: Value Added Resources and Referrals
Description: |
This workshop is intended for advisers to help them identify opportunities that could enhance the experiences of students. These opportunities will be diverse in nature and will cover a broad spectrum at the departmental, college, university and community levels. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will be able to identify available NC State and community resources which can enhance and add value to the academic and personal experiences of students.
- Provide participants with a list of resources identified.
- Frame the value added resources in terms of both Student focus and an Adviser or University focus through Education, Referral and services.
- Provide practical opportunities for adviser application and personal commitment to add value to their students’ advising experiences.

Advising 101
Description: |
This Core workshop will introduce new (and seasoned) advisers to the various policies and forms pertinent to the advising process including the progress toward degree policy. Presenters will also discuss advising essentials such as placement, FERPA, degree audits and other valuable resources. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will identify where to find university policies and resources from which to seek information on university policies.
- Participants will recognize where to access and how to read degree audits.
- Participants will better understand how students are placed into courses and course selection strategies.

Advising During Orientation
Description: |
Representatives from most colleges on campus will share how they advise
students at New Student Orientation. Come and get information on how other units advise at New Student Orientation as well as potentially getting suggestions for how
your college could refine their practice. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will be able to list various ways colleges on campus advise at New Student Orientation.
- Participants will be able to ask questions about how best to strucutre advising during New Student Orientation.
- Participants will be abel to identify best advising practices from across campus used during New Student Orientation.

Advising As Teaching
Description: |
This workshop will focus on the instructional process of advising. Specifically, the workshop will touch on the curriculum, pedagogy and learning outcomes that advisors can use to develop strong advising relationships. The student development theories that support excellent advising will be directly related to pedagogical principles for excellent teaching. Lastly, participants will have an opportunity to practice their skills working with different student scenarios. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will discuss the concept of “developmental advising” and how that allows students to become more self sufficient.
- Participants will practice scenarios focused on the three types of advising meetings: informational (policy); individual (focus on student’s strengths and interests); and future focused (what will I do when I graduate).
- Participants will discuss different roles to consider when designing advising experiences as learning experiences.
- Participants will write goals and objectives that they will be able to use when advising students to make explicit the expectations of the advising relationship.

Advising First Generation Students
Description: |
This workshop will explore the experiences of students who are the first in their families to attend college. The presenters will propose strategies for advising and empowering these students to excel. Current research, as well as actual student experiences from those who have participated in Pack Promise support groups for first generation college students will be shared. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will have an increased awareness of the unique needs and challenges of First Generation college students.
- Participants will increase their skill set and confidence in advising, interacting with and serving first generation students.
- Participants will become more aware of campus resources that support First Generation college students.

Advising From the Frontline – Focusing on the First Year Experience (CORE workshop)
Description: |
This workshop will explore the various needs and challenges facing students in their first year of college. Relevant theories which describe student development and have implications for advising first year students will be discussed and explained. Participants will have an opportunity to work with various scenarios and will gain practice skills in addressing the range of needs facing first year students.

- Participants will be able to identify and access advising resources, including current academic policies that particularly affect first year students.
- Participants will have a better understanding of potential advisee/adviser issues, and how to respond and interact effectively with first year students.

Advising Student Athletes
Description: |
This workshop will place emphasis on the unique time demands, added
pressure, and perspectives of student-athletes participating in varsity
athletics at NC State University. Explanation of NCAA continuing
eligibility standards as they pertain to advising will be reviewed.
Through exploration of case studies, the ASPSA staff will give examples
of unique situations that can impact scheduling and advising for
student-athletes. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will learn about the services, programs, and staff of the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes (ASPSA)
- Participants will explore the diverse needs and pressures of NCSU student-athletes, inclusive of NCSU and NCAA eligibility rules and regulations.
- Participants will highlight and examine the important role of major advisors on campus specific to student athletes.

Advising Students in Academic Distress
Description: |
This workshop will focus on the challenges facing students who are under academic pressure to succeed (i.e. suspended, on warning or failing to make adequate progress towards degree). Specifically, this workshop will address how to provide both support and challenge for the student to help identify realistic academic goals and objectives. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will explore ways to integrate the understanding of campus policies and proceedures into their advising session so that students will be aware of relevant campus requirements and expectations.
- Participants will practice assisting students to create realistic and legitimate academic goals.
- Participants will develop hands on strategies that can be used in advising sessions to provide students with a structure in which they can assess their progress towards academic goals.

Advising Students Interested in Graduate School
Description: |
This workshop will provide a checklist of critical steps on a proactive timeline to support students through the search for, and application to, post-baccalaureate education. Standardized tests for a variety of disciplines and letters of recommendation will also be discussed. |

Advising Students Who Identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, or Queer
Description: |
The purpose of this workshop is to explore how to best support the gay, lesbian and bisexual student population, as well as learning how to be a more effective ally for this group. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will become more aware of on and off campus resources for students who identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual.
- Participants will become more aware of and more knowledgeable of how to use inclusive language in classroom examples as well as day to day conversation.
- Participants will become more aware of how to be an effective ally for students who identify as gay lesbian or bisexual.

Advising Students with Disabilities
Description: |
This workshop addresses the range of disabilities that affect students on our campus and the possible impact of a student’s disability on his or her choice of major, academic load, registration needs, and timely degree completion. The concept of reasonable accommodation will be addressed within the context of the advising relationship. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will practice “accessible communication.”
- Participants will explore the concept of “appropriate helping” and when it is best to allow a student to do for him or herself.
- Participants will discuss what to do when they suspect that a student has a disability.

Advising Transfer and Non-Traditional Students
Description: |
This workshop will explore the basic tools used to advise a student about transfer. The “what, how, and why” of transfer articulation, 2+2 programs and course equivalencies will be discussed. Examples will be used to illustrate how to assist students in establishing transfer options. |

- To enhance advisors’ understanding of the acclamation process of transfer students.

Counseling Center Services, Referral, and Special Problems

This program will provide information on and discussion about Counseling Center services, how and when to refer students, Counseling’s role in late course drop and withdrawal decisions, how to manage and assist difficult students, and on-line resources for students and faculty. |

Cross Cultural Advising, International Students
Description: |
This module focuses on the special advising needs of international students and the growing population of international students including visas concerns, language skills, cultural differences, and available support services. Specific attention will be paid to different issues that might restrict a student’s eligibility to study at NC State. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will develop a general understanding of the process required for students to study internationally and to keep their legal eligibility to do so.
- Participants will become more aware of resources on campus for international students and specifically what services are provided by the Office of International Services.
- Participants will learn about the immigration impacts of various academic changes and how to best assist students in maintaining their legal status.
- Participants will become more aware of who international students at NC State are (graduate, undergraduate, countries represented).

Ethical Issues in Advising

This workshop will explore the potential ethical dilemmas that advisors can find themselves in when working with students. The Office of Student Conduct will share what resources are available to advisors to begin the conversation about issues such as cheating, plagiarism, harassment and various other ethical issues which might play out within the context of an advising session. |

Fellowship Advising
Description: |
This workshop enables participants to better identify potential scholarship and fellowship candidates among students. It also introduces participants to tools available to support research of and preparation for strong applications. |

Introduction to Undergraduate Tutorial Center (UTC)

This workshop will provide an overview of the various academic assistance opportunities available to undergraduate students. Tutoring is not remedial at NC State…the average GPA of UTC clients is a 3.0! Discussion will include when and how to encourage your advisees to seek academic support. |

Introduction to Virtual Advising Resources

The Virtual Advising Center has developed the Advising Central website as an on-line resource for faculty, staff and students. Learn where to find information on policies, procedures, majors and minors, and how to find the answer to many advising questions without leaving your desk! The world of advisement is at your fingertips in this workshop demonstrating the Advising Central website as a resource for both you and your students. |

Parental Involvement in Advising
Description: |
Parents and family members play an essential role in the student’s success at NC State University. This workshop focuses on the role of the academic adviser, outlines the advising process and focuses on the “Do’s and Don’ts” in working with parents. We will discuss
FERPA regulations, strategies for dealing with parental advocacy, and how to enlist family members as partners. |

- Participants will have an increased awareness and understanding of the services and resources provided by Parents and Families Services.
- Participants will have a better understanding of potential adviser/parent issues, and how to respond and interact effectively with parents and family members.
- Participants will have an increased awareness of commonly asked questions by parents and how to respond with respect to the Family Education Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA).

Pre-Health Advising

This workshop will provide an overview of the services offered through Health-PAC, and will provide advice to advisors about the important facts that advisors should know about medical school admissions and other health related graduate programs. |
Outcomes: |
- Participants will develop knowledge of steps that advisors can take to better prepare students for their first Health PAC appointment.
- Participants will have a better understanding of the procedures that students must be aware of when working with Health PAC.
- Participants will learn about the electronic portfolio system and how it is used by the institutional review committee to write a composite recommendation for aspiring medical, dental or optometry students.

Pre-Law Advising

This workshop will offer an overview of the Pre-Law Services available at NC State. The University Coordinator of Pre-Law Services will offer information about the various forms of advising assistance and resources available to students, staff and faculty and data on our graduates who attend law school.

- Participants will be able to refer interested students to a resource for law school planning.

This session will discuss the services available at NC State for military veteran and active duty students. Additionally, facilitators will offer suggestions for advisers to prepare them in meeting the needs of this growing population at NC State. |

We will help advisers learn how to use select NC State websites and online tools to access essential information and resources. We will cover tools for communicating with other advisees and other advisers (including on line chat). Participants will be able to see and use the Plan of Study from the adviser's and advisee's perspective. This session will be highly interactive. Participants should be prepared to share their ideas and experiences with the group. |

Understanding NC State's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for Financial Aid Eligibility
Description: |
This workshop will explain the creation and enforcement of NC State's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy for Financial Aid Eligibility. We will discuss students academic requirements to maintain eligibility as well as how students can appeal and restore their eligibility. |
Outcomes: |
- Understanding of why NC State has a Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for Financial Aid.
- Knowledge of what acceptable Academic Progress is for Financial Aid purposes.
- Clarity of how the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid determines a student is not meeting SAP.
- Guidance on how students can appeal and/or restore their eligibility to receive Financial Aid.
