Pack Promise Scholars - Peer Mentor Program

The Office of Advising Support, Information and Services (OASIS) is looking for students interested in mentoring Pack Promise first-year students. Our office is committed to meeting the transitional needs of Pack Promise Scholars by developing connections with current students, resources and campus representatives with the intent to aid in the smooth transition from high school to the college environment. The Peer Mentor Program pairs first year Pack Promise Scholars with second year Pack Promise Scholars in order to provide support throughout during the academic year.

Mentors serve as role models in the areas of academic achievement and co-curricular involvement at NC State University.

  • Opportunity to represent NC State University in an official capacity.
  • Develop friendships with other students.
  • Learn about programs, resources and support services offered at NC State University.
  • Gain valuable leadership experience.
  • Play a role in welcoming new Pack Promise students into the NC State community.
  • Opportunity to network with faculty, staff and administrators across campus and work closely with OASIS staff. These individuals may potentially serve as a reference for you in the future.

 

  • Participate in a training session prior to meeting with your mentee.
  • Be available via e-mail (responding within 48 hours of receipt) to your mentees and OASIS staff .
  • Represent the Pack Promise Program, the Office of Advising Support, Information and Services and NC State University in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Be prompt for all meetings with mentees as well as meetings with OASIS staff.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources and services and ask for assistance if you feel uncomfortable answering a question or working with a mentee.
  • Provide information and assistance to your mentees so that they may succeed academically and develop personally.
  • Share your own experiences as a source of support and information.
  • Serve as a mentor to between 1-3 Pack Promise students.
  • Attend all scheduled events, unless you have given two weeks notice that you will not be able to attend or have an emergency.
  • Correspond with your mentees via e-mail once a week to check in.
  • Meet face-to-face with your mentees at least once a month.
  • Attend a Peer Mentor training session each semester.
  • Turn in a monthly status form on each mentee to the Coordinator of the Pack Promise Peer Mentor Program.

 

To Become a Mentor: To Request a Mentor:
All Peer Mentor candidates must meet the following criteria:
  • Must be a Pack Promise Scholar
  • Must have completed two or more semesters
  • Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or above
  • Must participate in an interview with OASIS staff member
