Chinese Language and Culture Summer Program in NNU

Organized by Confucius Institute at NC State, cooperation with Nanjing Normal University

Program Terms: Summer, May 19-June 22, 2009 (five weeks),

Program Location: Nanjing , China (Includes excursions to Beijing , Shanghai , Suzhou and Yellow Mountain)

Language Requirement : Knowledge of Chinese not Necessary. Courses will be taught in English.

Cost: Cost of the program per student is $ 2404( tentative) . This cost includes:

               • Non-refundable application charge ($50);

•tuition for four weeks courses with 3 credits;

•text books;

• Accommodation during all the program;

• Excursion to Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou,and Yellow Mountain, includes transportation, hotel (three star hotel double room), meals, front gate entry tickets, travel insurance;

• Two times city tour in Nanjing ;

• International accident/ health insurance coverage

Not included in this cost :

• Airfare (approximately $1500);

• Passport and visa (approximately $200);

• Meals other than that during the excursion;

• Personal expenses.

Who Can Register in this Program? Any NC State Students who are interested in learning Chinese as second language and knowing more about Chinese culture. No field restriction. College students in other North Carolina Universities are also welcome.

Program Description:

This summer program is cooperation with Nanjing Normal University . During the five week program, experienced teachers who are specialized in teaching Chinese as second language will teach intensive Chinese language courses to the students. Previews Chinese Language knowledge is not required; students will be arranged in different classes according to their performance in the initial placement test. Various cultural activities such as lectures on topics of Chinese Culture, Chinese art performance, excursions to Beijing , Shanghai , Suzhou and Yellow Mountain will also be arranged. Students will have chance to talk and communicate directly with not only Chinese College students, but also other foreign students from all over the word who are learning Chinese there. Students will live in the University Hotel (air conditioned standard double rooms) in the beautiful Suiyuan campus of NNU, which is located in the center of Nanjing City , so they will be able to immerse in the cultural atmosphere of the local Chinese society.

About Nanjing City :

Located in the downstream Yangtze River drainage basin and Yangtze River Delta economic zone, Nanjing has always been one of China 's most important cities. As an ancient capital of China , Nanjing enjoys a worldwide reputation for its history and culture. Apart from having been the capital of China for six dynasties and of the Republic of China , Nanjing has also served as a national hub of education, research, transportation and tourism throughout history. With an urban population of more than 5 million, it is also the second largest commercial center in the East China region, behind only Shanghai . Nanjing is in the monsoon climate area of north subtropical zone, with clearly divided four seasons.

About Nanjing Normal University :

Nanjing Normal University (NNU) is located in Nanjing , the ancient capital of six dynasties and today's capital of Jiangsu Province . It is one of the national “211 Project institutions” with a long history which can be traced back to the year of 1902. The university provides programs in various areas such as liberal arts, history, philosophy, education, science, engineering, economics, law and public administration, from undergraduate to post-doctoral. The Chinese language and literature program in Nanjing Normal University has a very high academic prestige in China and is ranked 5 among all the universities with this program. NNU started its is TCSL (Teaching Chinese as Second Language) program as early as 1965, and is among one of the first sets of education institutes in China approved by the National Education Ministry to provide Chinese language learning program for foreign students. NNU also has a partnership with NC State in establishing the Confucius Institute in NCSU.
