With its goal to “help North Carolinians experience the best of Chinese culture”, Confucius Institute sponsored Raleigh Civic Symphony to present China Dreams concert at NC State on April 20.
More than 300 audiences gathered at Stewart Theater and witnessed the great success of combining traditional Chinese music with the western symphony in two exciting works. “Lamentation of a Hero” featured guzheng (a traditional Chinese instrument) performed by Jennifer Chang. Her masterful play connected the audience with a tragic hero in Chinese history. In “the Map” by Tan Dun, the orchestra unconventionally imitated Chinese folk instrument and singing, and created a fascinating blend of traditional ethnic music and modern technology. At the end of the concert, the audience all stood up and applauded for a long time to show their appreciation for the artists.
