College of Engineering

The College of Engineering encourages students to participate in International programs to prepare them for the demands of our global marketplace. College of Engineering faculty-led programs of study and research take students to Spain, France, Brazil, Mexico, Singapore, Japan, and many more destinations. Students can explore geography, culture, history, economy, and politics in the context of furthering their understanding of the effects that engineering, science, and technology has had all over the world. Below are several programs that are available to undergraduate engineering majors. Current and prospective students can link to the College of Engineering's International Programs Page for more details on scholarships, the international certificate program, and other student international resources.

  1. Summer in Segovia, Spain
    In Segovia, students use the city and surrounding area to explore language, technology, and culture. The classes, excursions, and field trips offered will encourage the ability to use the language in authentic settings and will allow the student to study and experience the rich culture of Spain. As part of the class work, students will visit the famous aqueduct, textile factories and other places to experience technology past and present.

  2. INNOVATE (Spring Break)
    International Technology & Leadership Conference in China & Japan
    INNOVATE 2006 is a conference for undergraduate and graduate technical students that examines the relationship between technology, globalization and leadership in the contemporary marketplace.

    As part of the conference, INNOVATE students study four major themes:
    • Relationship between Academia, Government, and Industry (e.g. government role in encouraging development of new industries such as bio- and nanotech ventures);
    • Technical Innovation (e.g. entrepreneurship, design and development of new technology considered within a cultural context);
    • Ethical Obligations of Technology Use and Leadership (e.g., establishing business ventures in developing countries);
    • Effective Global Leadership (e.g., problem solving in non-Western countries, working with a multicultural workforce).

  3. Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro (Year-long Program)
    Companies in the U.S. must compete worldwide in order to be successful. Products and services must meet the sociological and technical constraints of other countries. These products and services will be designed by teams of engineers from different countries working together via direct contact and via the Internet. The engineers who will be on these teams and who will lead these teams are engineers who have lived abroad and are proficient in another language. This exchange program with Brazil is designed to provide engineering students an eight-month living experience in Brazil and proficiency in Portuguese.

  4. Monterrey Tec, Mexico (Certificate Program -- International Business)
    The Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (also known as ITESM or “Tec”) is one of the most highly respected private universities in Mexico. With 27 campuses across Mexico, including 7 which are active in the exchange program, ITESM offers NC State students the opportunity to study in a wide variety of locations and settings.
