"GlobalEyes" refers
to the vision of the Office of International
Affairs (OIA) for helping students, faculty,
staff and others to connect with the world through
NC State's international programs and networks,
including those of:
The OIA collaborates with College Deans and
their International Coordinators plus other campus
units. Our leadership in international understanding
starts at home -- through the integration of
international scholars and students into campus
and community programs and hosting visitors from
around the world.
NC State University has a long history of involvement
in international activities. Like many other
American Land Grant universities, we have a rich
history of engagement and linkages with developing
countries through such entities as the US
Agency for International Development (USAID).
For much of the past half century, our strengths
in the agricultural and life sciences played
a major role in the establishment of an international
presence on our campus. Today, every College
and many units of NC State have linkages with
institutions, public and private agencies, and
industries in other countries. The OIA coordinates
the development of linkages and other collaborative
research and teaching agreements. We currently
have over 250 linkage agreements in nearly 90
countries. These agreements range from individual
investigator or laboratory collaborations to
comprehensive faculty, scholar and student exchanges.
SAIL is our Searchable Archive
of International Linkages, where one can
access the complete updated inventory of these
agreements as well as find the names of contact
people.
NC State typically has over 2000 international
students (undergraduate and graduate) on the
campus, and over 600 NC State students studying
outside the United States. We also have more
than 300 visiting scholars on the campus at any
time, coming from virtually every corner of the
world.
The OIS provides
the full array of critical and personal services,
including: immigration advising, processing of
visa documents, orientation, and other campus
and community programs. These and other services
are essential for internationals in order to
always be in compliance with current regulations,
and to make the transition to NC State as easy
as possible.
The SAO develops
and manages student study programs abroad, collaborating
closely with NC State faculty and overseas partners
to provide students with more than 500 direct
connections for study, and advisory services
on many more. The SAO also provides a wide range
of support services for exchange students from
other countries, and administers both on-campus
scholarships and student Fulbright grants for
overseas study.
The OIA collaborates with individuals and groups
at NC State who are most knowledgeable regarding
international program activities, including those
in: Africa, China, Japan, Latin America, Europe
and Taiwan.
NC State is the home of the North
Carolina Japan Center which serves the
entire state to strengthen the state's academic,
economic, scientific, and cultural ties with
Japan. The Center serves as a focal point for
interaction between Japanese and North Carolinians
and assists all citizens, universities, companies,
and public and private institutions in relations
with the Japanese.
NC State is also the home of the North
Carolina Center for South Asia Studies of the
Triangle South Asia Consortium: The Mission
of the NCCSAS is to seek to promote research
and teaching in the languages and cultures
of South Asia in the constituent universities
of the Triangle South Asia Consortium and the
region.
Our Master
of International Studies (MIS) is a professional
masters degree program that prepares students
for careers in government service, international
institutions, and non-governmental organizations.
The University
Standing Committee on International Programs
(CIP) is made up of NC State faculty members
who advise the OIA on international direction
and implementation of various programs.
The CIP oversees the NC
State Faculty Internationalization Seed Grant program
This program annually funds up to six grants
of as much as $5,000 each for faculty to promote
international scholarly activity and collaboration.
Each year CIP members also review numerous
applications for about 20 Study Abroad Scholarships
of $500 each.
Sigma
Iota Rho, the Honor Society for International
Relations, is managed by the OIA.
The OIA hosts the Peace
Corps Recruiter at NC State in Room 325,
Daniels Hall.
