Mission
In 1961, President John
F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote
world peace and friendship. Three
simple goals comprise the Peace Corps mission:
- Helping the people of
interested countries in meeting their need
for trained men and women.
- Helping promote a better
understanding of Americans on the part of
the peoples served.
- Helping promote a better
understanding of other peoples on the part
of all Americans.
The world has changed since 1961, and the Peace
Corps has changed with it. With more than 7,500
Volunteers in 71 countries, today's Peace Corps
is more relevant than ever.
Since the beginning, Peace Corps Volunteers have
done important work like teaching children and
bringing clean water to communities. However, Peace
Corps continually adapts to address global needs
as they arise. Today's Volunteers also work in
the following areas:
- Business Advising
- Health
- Community Development
- Agriculture/Livestock
- Forestry
- Protected Areas and Wildlife Management
|
 |
- Environmental Awareness
- Agribusiness
- Youth Development
- Urban and Regional Planning
- Computer Science and IT
- Non-Profit Development

As global interconnectedness expands and communities
face new challenges and opportunities, Peace Corps
strives to work with communities to maximize opportunities
and meet the new challenges.
