OBJECTIVE
The Study Abroad Development Grant program funds NCSU faculty members who wish to initiate new study abroad programs to enhance internationalization of the university.
Each award is limited to $2,000. The number of awards is contingent on funding, although two are typically awarded each year. Up to 2 additional awards may also be funded by the Study Abroad Office (SAO).
This funding will allow faculty members to make site visits necessary for the development of new study abroad programs. The award will primarily cover travel-related expenses, plus others related to the new program.
Each application for a Study Abroad Development Grant must include a letter of support from the SAO. The application also must include a letter from the applicant's department head indicating support for both the proposed program and the faculty member.
GUIDELINES
1. Preference will be given to countries/locations/courses that have a strong possibility of attracting student interest.
2. Applicants must show the particular value of the proposed location to NC State students. The integration of the culture and history of the location into the educational experience is expected.
3. Applicant's salary (regular academic or summer) is not allowed, but international expenditures in addition to travel to the location may be funded (i.e., data collection, local transportation, clerical materials, etc.).
4. By the June 29, 2007 deadline, successful grant applicants are expected to submit a formal proposal for the new study abroad program to the SAO. This would typically occur after grants winners are announced, but before site visits are carried out. Please see the faculty section on the SAO's website for details: http://studyabroad.ncsu.edu If developing a new course, applicants are advised to read "Guidelines for Developing or Revising Undergraduate Courses" before submitting a Course Action Form (CAF). http://www.ncsu.edu/uap/academic-standards/courses/crsguidetail.html
5. SADG funds would typically be used for a site visit in the May-to-October period, but other dates are acceptable. The funds must be used during fiscal year 2007-2008
6. Proposals will be reviewed by the Committee on International Programs. The committee members cannot provide feedback on individual grant proposals, due to the large number or proposals that they must review. Announcement of the awards will be made by the chair of the Committee on International Programs, through the Office of International Affairs.

DOCUMENTS NEEDED:
1. Cover page with signatures (see attached). Note that internal processing forms are not required, because the funding source is internal state money.
2. Grant proposal (limited to two pages). The proposal should briefly describe the goals and activities of both the site visit and the proposed study abroad program, and address the suitability of the location as a place for study abroad.
The CIP recognizes that the grant is for an exploratory trip, and that many details of the study abroad program itself are still tentative or preliminary in March when grant applications are due. However, the grant proposal should nonetheless cover to the extent possible such considerations as courses to be offered and who will teach them, integration of the culture into the program, any overseas university involvement, and a brief safety assessment. (see Proposal outline, below)
3. Personal statement from the Principal Investigator, outlining his or her particular qualifications for the proposed program and location
4. Brief CV of PI.
5. Letter of support from the NC State Study Abroad Office.
6. Letter of support from the applicant's department head.
