All J-1 students who wish to engage in off-campus employment related to their field of studies may be eligible for up to 18 months of Academic Training (AT) during and/or after their period of study. While most J-1 students prefer to "save" their 18 months of AT for the period following completion/graduation some will engage in AT during the summer or PT during the semester via the Co-op program. Students may also request AT for on-campus employment after they graduate. J-1 students who are on the GSSP or work part-time on campus before graduation apply for and receive J-1 On-Campus Employment Authorization, which does not reduce the amount of time they have for AT (18 months throughout the J-1 period - even through successive levels of study). Post-docs may be eligible for an additional 18 months to continue and complete their research (for a total of 36 months). Students must receive a specific offer letter for an appropriate position from the employer that describes the job offer and conditions before we can approve the AT.
J-1 students MUST obtain employment authorization in SEVIS before beginning all types and instances of employment including AT. OIS advisors must certify in SEVIS that the proposed employment is related to the student's field of study, original research goals, and/or educational objectives. For us to do this, we kindly ask the student's DGP (some DGPs will forward the request to the Committee Chair) to review the offer letter to see if it meets these conditions and to recommend the AT (or not) to OIS. We appreciate your taking a few minutes to answer the following questions below.
J-1 students sponsored by NC State who wish to apply for AT should first submit a request in the OIS HelpDesk system. They should then ask you to complete this on-line recommendation form. You may also print out a blank copy and fill it in by hand if you wish or if you have trouble submitting the online version. The OIS advisor will collect the student's request, a copy of the offer letter, and your online recommendation then enter the data into SEVIS. When a new DS-2019 with the new Employment (and new end date) is returned, OIS will contact the student to pick up the new DS-2019 and employment authorization. You can read more information about J-1 Academic Training on the OIS website or OIS HelpDesk.
