What Do You Think?
For students & scholars, by students & scholars!
OIS has created this space on our website for international students to post surveys needed for their research at NC State University. In turn, other students who like sharing their opinions can come here and take part in the surveys posted. You get to help your fellow international students and you get to voice your opinions on a variety of topics!
To submit a request for a survey, please e-mail ois@ncsu.edu. Please remember that OIS staff will make the final decision on whether or not a particular survey can be posted on our website.

Focus-Group on Scientific Authorship hosted by Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society
Participation Deadline: Saturday, November 8th, 2011
We are recruiting participants for focus-group discussions on scientific authorship on November 12, 2011.
This research is being conducted by Dr. Daniel Vasgird of West Virginia University; Dr. Dena Plemmons of San Diego State University; Dr. Stephanie Bird, an independent consultant, and Dr. Elsa Youngsteadt of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.
We’re looking especially for participants who are:- Graduate students who have training experience outside the U.S., or
- Postdocs who have training or publication experience outside the U.S., and/or experience with international research collaborations, or
- Faculty who have training or work experience outside the U.S., and/or experience with international collaborators or
- Established researchers in industry and government research agencies
Individuals from all scientific disciplines are needed. Participants must be at least 18 years old. There may be slots available for individuals who do not have the international experiences listed above, so all interested individuals are encouraged to respond! Insights from the focus-group discussions will help shape the next steps of our research, such as developing survey questions for future use. Ultimately, we’d like to compile a workshop curriculum or other educational materials that will help raise awareness of the complexity of assigning authorship credit, and provide tools to preclude or navigate potential conflicts.
The discussions themselves will cover topics such as standards for scientific authorship and common sources of dispute in authorship decisions. Each group will be small (up to 10 people) and will include individuals who represent a diversity of scientific disciplines and career stages, many of whom have had experience studying, working or collaborating internationally. If you participate, we will also ask you to fill out some basic information about your scientific career, such as field of research and countries where you have worked or studied. That information will be linked to comments made in the focus group, but your name will not. However, because of the group setting of the discussion, we cannot guarantee that what you say will be kept confidential.
Participation in any part of this research is voluntary, and if you participate, you will not need to answer every question.
The discussion is a one-time event, from 10:00am to 11:30am on the morning of November 12, in Raleigh. Participation is on a volunteer basis. (A light breakfast will be provided.)
If interested, please contact Elsa Youngsteadt at elsa@sigmaxi.org or at 919-547-5251, by November 8. Please also feel free to forward this information to other individuals who may be interested. Because the focus-group size and diversity are important, I cannot guarantee a spot for everyone who responds, but I would encourage all interested individuals to contact me. If you have questions or concerns about this project, please contact Elsa Youngsteadt.
Thanks for considering it!
