OIS Partners
International
Alumni
Former international students and scholars at NC State University are encouraged to
maintain contact with OIS. Please let us know how you are doing and what you are
up to. International alumni and scholars who engaged in research at NC State often find
it enjoyable and profitable to connect with other alumni after they return to their home country.
There are even some international alumni groups developing in major cities overseas.
Such groups sometimes get together to watch Wolfpack sports, but they can also be
instrumental in international student recruitment efforts and fundraising. If you are
interested in finding out about ways to become involved or connect with fellow NC
State alumni and friends, contact OIS or the Alumni Office. Contributions (an amount
of money, an endowed scholarship established in your name or in memory of a loved
one, a significant contribution for a building or other major project, or other gift) are both
possible and greatly appreciated. Please contact OIS and someone will be glad to
contact you and discuss your interest further.
Community Friends
and Volunteers
OIS is interested in partnering with individuals, families, businesses, and
organizations in the Triangle area in order to improve and increase the impact of the
international student and scholar population on our local community. One exciting program enjoying success is our Culture Corps, which
enables international students and scholars to explain their culture, language, and
customs to children and families in local schools and civic groups as well as Raleigh's
Exploris Museum, the world's first global experience center.
Unfortunately, because of our
limited staff and budget, OIS has not been able to implement all the wonderful
programs that have been conceived and requested, but with your help we can sustain
and develop programs that will enrich us all as we become a more global society.
American Student
Involvement
If you are a US citizen student (or permanent resident) and would like to become involved in
international education or in the life of an international student at NC State, there are
numerous ways to do so. We are fortunate to have several students working and/or
volunteering in our office, but we can always use more! Many students have enjoyed becoming
International Friendship Partners or Global Speak conversation partners. Some
American students join us on Fridays at our English Conversation Club and enjoy meeting
international students as well as helping them with their conversational ability. Another
short-term, fun commitment is being an
Orientation Counselor (a few days before each semester begins to help new
international students get oriented and settled. Call or email us today to discuss your current interests, needs, and opportunities.
Contributions
and Gifts
There are various ways to make a charitable gift to OIS or through OIS to the
international community.
A trust account has been set up which can be used by OIS to enhance our
programs and services to the international community at NC State. Contributions are
tax-deductible and checks can be sent directly to OIS. Please make checks out to
NC State Foundation and on the memo line either put "OIS" or
"Account#143076-681221." A receipt will be issued by the University shortly after
depositing the check. For gifts other than checks, please contact the OIS Director.
There are few scholarships and loan funds dedicated to international students. The Don Roberts fund, established in the memory of a former International Student Office director and who was a great friend of international students,
is used for short-term emergency loans to current international students. Several other
organizations, including the West Raleigh Rotary Club, the Delta Kappa Gamma
Sorority, and the University Advancement Office, have established modest scholarships
for international students, but more scholarships are needed. There are currently no
substantial need- or merit-based scholarships for international undergraduate students
and sponsor/donors are eagerly needed.
