CHANGE OF STATUS INFORMATION

If you are already in the United States in another nonimmigrant status and you intend to apply for a change of status to F-1 or J-1 student status, you must speak with an OIS advisor. You can contact OIS via telephone at 919-515-2961 or email at OIS@ncsu.edu.  The OIS advisor will discuss with you the methods by which you may change your status. Please keep in mind that it can take six to twelve months for a change of status to be processed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You will have no employment authorization while you are waiting.

If you intend to change to F-1 or J-1 student status, you must submit both the Visa Clearance Form (VCF) and Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR) to OIS. Please remember that you do not have to be in F-1 or J-1 status to study at NC State.  Other visa classes are eligible to study in degree programs (example: H1B, H-4, J-2, etc.).  If you have questions concerning your eligibility, please contact OIS at 919-515-2961 or OIS@ncsu.edu.
