1) A few more additions have made their way to the OISSS website - a Calendar of Events and a Country Contacts List. From the main OISSS homepage, you can access either the calendar or the list of international students and scholars who have voluntaril y submitted their name and contact information for those in the community who might like to contact them. 2) A tax seminar for the international (nonresident filers) at NC State has been planned for Friday, March 19th from 2:00 PM until 5 PM. Location is Williams Hall Room 2215. Someone from the NC State University Payroll Office and an Internal Revenue Se rvice taxpayer representative will discuss things like the substantial presence test, tax treaties, who must file which forms, how to complete the 1040 NR, etc. Please refer to our webpage on taxes for more information. 3) Scholarship News: The McNamara Scholarship deadline has passed, but the West Raleigh Rotary International Student Scholarship ($1,000) application deadline is almost here (March 19). For more information, please go to: http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/academic_affairs/oisss/febschol.htm or come by OISSS for an application.

 

4) Spouse Orientation for spouses of international students and scholars who have recently arrived in the US will be held March 26th from 2:00 to 3:30 in Daniels Hall, Room 216. Please call Darla K. Deardorff at 515-2961 for more information.

 

5) The International Women's Potluck, co-sponsored by OISSS and the Women's Center will meet March 24 from 6 to 8 PM at the Women's Center (Talley Student Center, third floor). The Presentation and discussion will feature History of Women's Rights. Bri ng a covered dish and a friend.

 

6) The Graduate School's Crosstalk Seminar for April will be "Ethics in the Workplace" on April 8, 1999 from 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. in Witherspoon Theater. The speaker will be Peter Lehrer, Former President/CEO, Bovis Construction, NY, NY. More informat ion is available at the Graduate School's web calendar.

 

7) International Research Seminar in Commemoration of the Chancellor's Inauguration. Mark your calendars for Friday, April 16th, from 3:00 to 4:30 where more than a dozen International Scholars and Students from NC State University will be presenting t heir research in a posterboard format or computer exhibition. Come see what other international students and scholars are doing here and support international programs at NC State. Refreshments will be served. Talley Student Center, Walnut Room. Free.

 

8) An end of the year reception is being planned for all international students and scholars who will be graduating or departing this Spring or Summer. Mark you calendars for Wednesday, April 21st from 4:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m. This exciting event is being co-sponsored by OISSS and the Office of Study Abroad and will be tentatively held in the Court of the Carolinas near Caldwell Lounge. We hope to have live music and there will be lots of free food and activities (volleyball, etc). Come let us say, "Good-bye," before you take your final exams, graduate, or depart.

 

9) The Emerging Issues Form this year will beheld March 30th and 31st at the McKimmon Center. Call 515-7741 to register. This year's title is Global Economic Storms and will be of special interest to student of the global economy. The speakers include: Robert Ingram (CEO, Glaxo), James Goodnight (CEO, SAS), George W. Henderson III (CEO, Burlington Industries), Senator John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV, and Robert Rubin (Secretary of the US Treasury). The first 10 NC State Students who sign up pay the special price of $50 (instead of $150). Student scholarships may also be available from your College Dean.
