1. International Research Exposition
Congratulations to all the international student and scholars who were nominated and selected to present at this year's NC State University International Research Exposition, which will be held this Friday from 3:00 to 4:30 in the Talley Student Center Walnut Room. This free event is offered in part to celebrate the installation of our new Chancellor. All international students, scholars, and their families are invited and encouraged to attend the Posterboard format Research Exposition. This is a great way for all of us to highlight the important contributions the international students and scholars make to the University Community. Please plan on dropping by for a few minutes between 3 and 4:30 - no reservations are necessary and you will may run into someone you know or learn something new. It will be a nice study break, it will be informal, and there will be refreshments. A list of the presenters, their departments, and their research topics are listed below. Special thanks to Ms. Irene Anthony, OIS SS International Scholar Advisor, who organized this event.
2. End of the Year Celebration
Mark your calendars for Wednesday (4-21-99) and plan on coming to our end of the year party. This free event will be an opportunity to say, "Good-bye," and "Good luck," to all the international students or scholars who will be graduating or leaving NC State. The Study Abroad Office is co-sponsoring this event with OISSS and all returning and departing Study Abroad students (both international and American) are also invited so it may also be a chance to meet someone who just came from - or will be going to - your country. There will be free food and perhaps some games or music. Meet between 4 and 6 in the Court of the Carolinas (rainsite: Caldwell Lounge).
3. Summer Employment and Internships
If you will not be graduating or leaving, you may be interested in working this summer. Please remember, all off-campus employment must be authorized in advance and in writing by either INS or OISSS (unless you have a different J-1 Program Sponsor). F- 1 students who want to work off campus this summer should come to a practical training session (held every Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:00 PM in Daniels 246). If you are in F-1 status, will continue your studies here in the Fall, and are not taking courses th is summer, you may work ON-campus as much as you want (no maximum).
4. Summer Break and/or travel
If you will be going home for the summer or traveling abroad, be sure to have your I-20 or IAP-66 signed at OISSS before you leave. We would be happy to confirm whether or not your visa stamp will still be valid and can advise you about getting new vis as if necessary.
5. Program Extension
If your Form I-20 or IAP-66 will expire in May and you will not be finished by then, please arrange to have a program extension completed before the expiration date. Your visa stamp itself (in your passport) may expire and you can still be in lawful st atus (provided you maintain fulltime enrollment, make good progress, and do not work without authorization, etc). Check the validity dates on your passport - maintaining a valid foreign passport is another prerequisite to maintaining lawful nonimmigrant s tatus.
6. Special Olympics
This summer, the World Special Olympics will be take place here in the Triangle. NC State is co-hosting the Games along with other area universities and organizations. The Special Olympics organizers are still looking for volunteers - particularly thos e who can help translating or providing services to athletes and their families who may not speak English. If you are interested in volunteering your services (international students and their families are reminded they may volunteer - that is, not be pai d or receive any other benefits for their services) for a few days or few weeks this summer, please contact the Games organizers at http://www.99games.com/Volunteer/ or http://www.globalcenter.org/specoly.htm.
