Orientation Volunteers

OIS coordinates New International Student Orientation for nearly 500 new international students each year. We are need of Orientation volunteers to assist our office in four different capacities: Small Group Leader, Check-in Volunteer, Temporary Housing Host, and Orientation Team.

1) Small Group Leader: If you were a new student in a foreign country, would you like someone to answer your email questions before arrival and help you during your first few days at the university??
Of course you would! Small Group Leaders play an integral role in answering basic and questions from new international students about the university/Raleigh, and also in assisting OIS during New International Student Orientation. If you would be interested in assisting your own small group, click here.

2) Check-in Volunteer: During the two weeks before classes begin, volunteers are needed to check-in new international students. This entails making passport photocopies, reviewing contents in the Welcome Packet (which includes important university information such registration, ID cards, email, health care services, etc.), and answering new student questions. Volunteers sign-up for either a morning or afternoon shift and must attend a one hour training meeting. If interested, please contact the Programs Coordinator, 515-2961.

3) Temporary Housing Host: Many times, new international students need a place to stay their first few days in Raleigh while they search for an apartment. You can volunteer to host a student in your home/apartment for a maximum of 3 days. This is a rewarding way to make a student's first few days in the United States comforting and memorable. If interested, please complete the Temporary Host application.

4) Orientation Team: This is a distinct group of volunteers who are interviewed and selected by OIS to serve in both an advisory and hands-on capacity to plan New International Student Orientation in the spring and the fall. Read the job description here. Applicants are chosen in the fall and should submit an application to the Programs Coordinator, before October 14th. Benefits include gaining professional skills in event planning and also working closely with a diverse group of students who quickly become friends!
