- OIS Updates for DGPs and Grad Secretaries

The focus will be on changes within both enrollment and employment processes and the ways in which DGPs and Grad Secretaries can guide their students in light of these changes. Covered in this one hour session will be the following:
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT) – New updates regarding eligibility requirements for CPT during the academic semester.
- Optional Practical Training (OPT) - Changes in determining the student’s program end date and start date of OPT which may affect the student’s eligibility for on-campus employment.
- Changes in Curriculum - Changes to the requirements for students changing between thesis options and if / when the Advisors Form or funding may be required.
- Changes in Level - Review of how the anticipated completion date and effective semester are important in the issuance of a new I-20.
- Masters “en route” - Changes in the OIS reporting requirements for students and how abandoning the Ph.D. can affect the student’s F-1 status and other benefits.
- J-1 Exchange Visitor Program Overview for PIs, UBOs, and Personnel Reps

The focus will be on the benefits of the J-1 visa as a tool for advancing the
University’s research and teaching objectives. Covered in this one hour session will be the following:
- Overview of the benefits and limitations of the J-1 visa for Short-term and Research Scholars.
- Discussion of basic eligibility requirements and the request process for hosting visiting Scholars from abroad.
- Mysteries of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program explained: The “home residence requirement”, “bars on repeat participation “ and others.
