Academic Advising During New Student Orientation at NC State University

An orientation to the university is critical to the success of new students. Appropriate academic advising is critical to the orientation process.

Overview
One of the most important objectives of New Student Orientation is to connect students with an academic adviser so they can receive vital information regarding academic policies, procedures, and requirements. Research has demonstrated that the advising / mentoring relationship students have with faculty is a very important factor in the future success of the student. The students’ relationship with an adviser begins during Orientation, and continues throughout their four-year academic career.

New Student Orientation’s Responsibility
NC State University is very committed to offering students a comprehensive and responsive advising system during New Student Orientation. At Orientation, college administrators and representatives have an opportunity to present an academic overview of the university, which describes the college and degree requirements, as well as academic policies and procedures. After the introduction to the University, students meet with an adviser and receive more information about the selection of general education courses as well as courses in the student’s major of interest. It is not uncommon for individual departments to host meetings during Orientation to provide information about specific majors or connect students with their student ambassadors.

A Student’s Responsibilities
During Orientation, students are informed that they have the primary responsibility for planning the individual program and meeting graduation requirements for their course of study. This involves a) remaining current with university, college, and departmental curriculum requirements, b) keeping informed of academic deadlines and changes in academic policies and c) consulting with their adviser early in their academic career, during registration periods and at other times when it is needed. Information about general education, university requirements, academic policies and procedures, pertinent campus resources and first-year developmental issues are all components of an advising session.

Core Understanding
There is a link between effective advising and academic achievement and therefore must be infused into the core meaning, practice and identity of New Student Orientation.
