Orientation Counselor Position Description

Important Employment Dates:

Spring Training Course (USC 223): Spring 2012, Tu/Th 3:00 - 4:15

Additional Spring Training: Saturday, January 28 & Friday, February 17, 5 p.m.- Saturday, February 18, 7 p.m.

Summer Training: June 16 - June 24

New Student Orientation: June 25 - July 27, & August 13


The following is a summary of the significant expectations for which Orientation Counselors are responsible:

Assistance to Students

  • Welcome new students to the university and assist them in the initial orientation registration and check-in.
  • Develop a rapport with new students.
  • Be accessible and willing to assist with any information needs of students throughout each orientation session, including the evening/night hours.
  • Prepare and conduct well-organized and thorough small group meetings for new students.
  • Become familiar with the different needs of first-time-in-college students and transfer students and consider these differences in working with students during the Orientation program.
  • Assist students with online registration and academic advising as necessary.
  • Serve as an academic and social role model.
  • Go "above and beyond" to anticipate and meet both expressed and unexpressed needs.

Educational Duties

  • Complete all class requirements for the spring training course.
  • Communicate information to students about academic resources and student activities and services.
  • Aid students in understanding academic language and requirements, and assist them with the development of a class schedule.
  • Educate students about their responsibilities to the university by explaining university policies and procedures.
  • Communicate logistical information to students to assist in their adjustment to university life at NC State.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Attend all staff training sessions and meetings.
  • Arrive to campus in time to begin Summer Training and remain after Summer Orientation sessions are finished to complete necessary tasks.
  • Efficiently complete all logistical tasks as requested by the Orientation directors and their assistants to ensure the Orientation program proceeds smoothly and effectively.
  • Maintain regular communications with the directors and their assistants and discuss with them situations that warrant their attention or action.
  • With a positive attitude, participate in all assigned duties of Orientation fully and take initiative with unanticipated tasks or problems.
  • Assist the presenter and/or participants at various programs, meetings, and activities throughout Orientation.
  • Be supportive of all Orientation staff members.
  • Complete all staff assignments and evaluation reports.
  • Respond appropriately to feedback and program evaluations.
  • Remain flexible at all times. Last minute as well as major programmatic changes may occur at any time.
