New Student Orientation Welcomes You to NC State

The Office of New Student Orientation, Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs, would like to welcome all first-year, transfer, and newly matriculated students to North Carolina State University. We look forward to meeting you on either of these two dates:

  • Friday, December 14, 2007 or
  • Tuesday, January 8, 2008

It is required that you attend one of these Orientations to receive vital information, such as course placement, parking information, computer resources, and to learn about opportunities inside and outside the classroom.

Orientation is mandatory and all students--First-Year, Transfer, and former NC State Lifelong Education students--must attend.

If you are a person with a disability and desire any assistive devices, services, or other accommodations to participate in this event, contact Lori Wilson (919) 515-1234 during business hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. EST Monday-Friday at least 10 working days before the event.

About the Program

Dates: Friday, December 14, 2007 or Tuesday, January 8, 2008
Check-in time: 8:00 a.m. - 8:45 a.m.  (coffee and pastries on-site)
Location: Talley Student Center
Cost: A Transfer Orientation fee of $45 is charged to all transfer students, regardless of your attendance at Orientation. This fee is included in your tuition and fees statement. Do not send payment to New Student Orientation.

Orientation will be held at Talley Student Center, which is located on Cates Avenue. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. Students must check in to receive their information packets. The program begins at 9:00 a.m.

Complete and return your registration form to our office by: December 7 for the December 14 program and January 3 for the January 8 program.

Contact the academic department into which you have been accepted to receive advising assistance and course registration information prior to attending Spring Entry Orientation.

Foreign Language Placement Test

All students who need to be placed in French, Spanish, German, or Latin should visit the Foreign Language Technology Center website at http://fltc.chass.ncsu.edu/ and click on location and hours to view lab operation hours or call 919.513.2463. The lab is located on the corner of Current and Stinson Drives. The computerized test takes 25-30 minutes and the results are available immediately.

For all other languages, or if you have questions, contact the Associate Department Head, Dr. Dudley M. Marchi, dmm@unity.ncsu.edu. International students who need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) should follow the information from the Office of International Services.

Parking

Students will be allowed to park on campus in the Reynolds Coliseum parking deck (DC permit areas). Enter the Colisem Deck only from Jenson Drive or Jeter Drive. Place the Parking Permit from your Orientation packet on the dashboard of your vehicle so that Transportation officers will know you are attending Orientation. A parking permit is not required for the January 8th program.

DO NOT PARK IN ACCESSIBLE, PAY LOT AREAS, VENDOR OR ANY OTHER RESERVED SPACES. DO NOT PARK IN METERED SPACES.

Directions

From Chapel Hill via I-40: Take I-40 East approximately 25 miles to Raleigh. At the I-40/Wade Avenue split, stay on I-40 East to Gorman Street, Exit 295. Turn left onto Gorman Street and follow it to the third traffic light. Turn right onto Avent Ferry Road. Turn right onto Western Boulevard and take the first left onto Pullen Road. Turn left onto Dunn Avenue and follow the Orientation Parking signs.

From Durham via US 70: Take US 70 to downtown Raleigh (US 70 turns into Glenwood Avenue). Follow Glenwood Avenue to Oberlin Road. Turn right onto Oberlin Road (approximately 3 miles). Turn right onto Hillsborough Street. Take an immediate left at Pullen Road. Turn right onto Dunn Avenue and follow the Orientation Parking signs.

From Rocky Mount via US 64: Take US 64 West to Raleigh.  US 64 West will merge with I-440 (Inner Beltline). Take I-440 to I-40 West to Gorman Street Exit 295.  Turn right onto Gorman and then right at the second traffic light onto Avent Ferry Road.  Turn right onto Western Boulevard and take the first left onto Pullen Road.  Turn left onto Dunn Avenue and follow the Orientation Parking signs.

From Fayetteville via US 401: Take US 401 to Raleigh. Then take I-40 West to Gorman Street, Exit 295. Turn right onto Gorman Street and then right at the second traffic light onto Avent Ferry Road. Turn right onto Western Boulevard and take the first left onto Pullen Road. Turn left onto Dunn Avenue and follow the Orientation Parking signs.

From South Carolina via I-95: Take I-95 North to I-40 West. Proceed on I-40 West into Raleigh to Gorman Street Exit 295. Turn right onto Gorman Street and then right at the second traffic light onto Avent Ferry Road. Turn right onto Western Boulevard and take the first left onto Pullen Road. Turn left onto Dunn Avenue and follow the Orientation Parking signs.
