Students and visitors alike have often asked, "What's the deal with all the bricks?" It's true, the campus of North Carolina State University has a plethora of bricks. All but two of the buildings on main campus are constructed in brick, as are numerous walkways and sculptures, like the ones above.

There are probably as many myths about the bricks at NC State as there are actual bricks. A popular myth claims that a grateful alumnus donates a certain number of bricks every year, and if those bricks are not used then there will not be a donation next year. Another variation of that myth claims the mysterious donor is actually Dan Allen (of Dan Allen Drive fame).

What is known about the bricks is that the original bricks for Holladay Hall were donated by the state prison and built by the inmates. Regardless of the reasons, the NC State bricks give campus a unique and consistent look that leaves a lasting impression on anyone who walks through campus.
