Hillsborough Street marks the northern boundary of the main campus and is known as the front door of N.C. State University. Originally known as Hillsboro Road, it has played an important role in campus life since the founding of the University. In the early 1900s a trolley line would take students and faculty to downtown Raleigh. Today, Hillsborough Street is home to businesses, restaurants, shops, and entertainment.

The picture above is taken from the northeastern corner of campus and shows an ivy-covered Thompkins Hall before fire destroyed the majority of it in 1914. Thompkins was rebuilt, but only the base of the tower now stands.
