Built in 1938 in what used to be a treasured pecan grove, Nelson Hall was originally the home of the School of Textiles. The building was named after Thomas Nelson, a native of England who joined NC State's faculty in 1901 and became head of the Textiles department in 1905. In 1928, the School of Textiles was officially formed and Nelson was appointed dean. In 1954, following Nelson's death, the Textiles building was officially renamed Nelson Hall.

The College of Textiles occupied Nelson Hall until 1991 when it moved to the newly built Centennial Campus. The College of Management moved into Nelson Hall shortly after, and performed renovations in 1994 and most recently in 1999.
