NC State's Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) consistently ranks among the top 20 technology transfer programs nationally. OTT was established in 1984 to support the research and education enterprise of the university.

As a public institution, NC State has a responsibility to make its research results available for the benefit of the community. This transfer of academic discovery is the core mission of the Office of Technology Transfer. OTT implements the concept of the Land Grant mission upon which NC State was founded.

NC State’s academic discoveries coupled with OTT activities result in new patents, industry partners, start-up companies, products on the market and national recognition of NC State’s research programs. Our office transfers ideas, designs, devices, and discoveries generated by faculty, staff, and students for the greater public good.

The Office of Technology Transfer undertakes this service for the University by working closely with the Intellectual Property Committee and inventors to provide counsel regarding patents and copyrights, and to assist in determining the most effective methods for transfer of technology.
