Trail Descriptions

This trail affords one of the few opportunities to combine overnight camping with a canoe trip in the coastal plains. At the junction of the River and the Great Dismal Swamp Canal, a high spoil bank overlooking the water offers the canoeist a dry place to spend the night. This is a natural setting and precautions should be made for some of the natives, which include cottonmouth water moccasins.
This trail offers a variety of paddling options, including 5, 9, 13 or 20 mile outings. A cut-through between the river and the Dismal Swamp Canal offers a short 5 mile outing, or you can paddle down the river until you reach the Dismal Swamp Canal at approximately 6.6 miles, then turn north and paddle 3 miles to the Bingham Road Access for an approximate 10 mile outing.
Following the river down to the Shipyard Landing Access will provide an approximate 13 mile outing, or you may paddle the river all the way to Elizabeth City for a 21.5 mile outing.
