Trail Descriptions

CF-RO/CO-1     Lumber River Trail, 126.5 Miles
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Time Required: See Chart under Northern portion map description
The Lumber River is divided into three sections; scenic, recreational and natural. Each section offers a variety of wild wonders as it meanders through a four-county region of the North Carolina Coastal Plain. The scenic section is the uppermost part which flows from State Road 1412 to Back Swamp and is the narrowest portion of the river. It is classified as scenic because it is undeveloped and provides the user with the chance to experience the great outdoors with little accessibility by people, development and roads. The middle portion of the river from Back Swamp to Jacob Branch and a smaller area at the Fair Bluff town limits are classified as recreational areas. These areas provide recreational as well as scenic values, and are easily accessible by many roads. The last section from Jacob Branch to the South Carolina border is the natural section of the river. The natural section is very remote country and is generally only accessible by trails. The Lumber River is the fourth river in the state - and the only North Carolina black water river - to earn federal designation as a national wild and scenic river.

Approximately 115 miles of the Lumber River is included in the Lumber River State Park. While traveling the waterway, please respect the rights of private property owners and avoid trespassing upon private land along the river banks.

For additional information on the Lumber River Trail, contact the Lumber River State Park, 2819 Princes Ann Road, Orrum, NC 28369, Phone: (910) 628-9844.
