Trail Descriptions


LN-PA-1     Goose Creek Island Kayak Trail, 34 Miles
Skill Level: Experienced Difficulty: Difficult Time Required: 15-30 Hours
This trail offers the experienced kayaker an opportunity to circumnavigate Goose Creek Island, home to the small communities of Lowland and Hobucken. This trail is approximately 34 miles long and is divided into three sections. The majority of this trail is located on the Pamlico River, Pamlico Sound, Goose Creek, Spring Creek and Jones Bay and should be used by only the most experienced kayakers.

LN-PA-15     Middle Bay Trail, 3.8 Miles
Skill Level: Beginner/Novice Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Time Required: 2-4 Hours
This trail begins at the dirt boat ramp at the end of Middle Bay Road and offers a short half day outing. The banks of upper Middle Bay are lined with salt water marshes dotted with thickets of pine forest. The area is surrounded by private duck impoundments which may provide an opportunity to view waterfowl as they frequent the area.

LN-PA-16     Jones Bay Loop Kayak Trail, 13 Miles
Skill Level: Experienced Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult Time Required: 6-10 Hours
This trail offers an opportunity for experienced kayakers to circumnavigate Jones Island. Other than the published access site there are no public lands or additional access sites along this trail as all of Jones Island is privately owned. The eastern side of Jones Island is exposed to the Pamlico Sound where the paddler should exercise caution for rough waters.

LN-PA-34     No Jacket Creek Trail, 0.8 Miles
Skill Level: Intermediate/Experienced Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult Time Required: 4-8 Hours
The No Jacket Creek Trail begins at the 5.5 mile point along the Gale Creek/Bay River Trail. One can only guess how this small creek got its name. This small creek offers an opportunity to explore a coastal salt marsh environment.

LN-PA-35     Tar Creek Trail, 0.6 Miles
Skill Level: Intermediate/Experienced Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult Time Required: 1-3 Hours
Located on the west side of Gale Creek, Tar Creek offers another interesting side excursion.

LN-PA-36     Whealton Creek Trail, 0.7 Miles
Skill Level: Intermediate/Experienced Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult Time Required: 1-3 Hours
Located on the west side of Gale Creek, this small creek offers an opportunity to extend your outing by combining it with the other small creeks in the area that are located adjacent to Gale Creek.
