Trail Descriptions

This trail begins at the Waterfront Park in Bayboro and follows the north shore of Bay River to Vandemere. The north shore of Bay River is open water exposed to northeast winds which can make the river quite rough. Paddlers should be aware of wind speed and direction when paddling this trail.

Located just west of the Town of Bayboro Waterfront Park, the South Prong of the Bay River offers a sheltered paddle outing in the upper reaches of Bay River. The creek weaves past some of the homes of Bayboro before changing into an undeveloped creek that is home to a variety of birds and wildlife. The banks are covered with a variety of marsh grasses and ponds of pine trees.
The South Prong of Bay River Trail is 1.65 miles in length from the Waterfront Park to the bridge across Neal's Creek Road. Once reaching the bridge you can return to the Waterfront Park to complete your outing. For those more adventurous you can continue this paddle past the bridge into the narrows of the head of Bay River before returning to the Park.

Located approximately 2.4 miles from the Bayboro Waterfront Park, Racoon Creek offers a quiet, well-sheltered paddle along the winding creek. The banks of the creek are framed by a variety of marsh grasses and are mostly undeveloped.

Located approximately 4.6 miles from the Bayboro Waterfront Park, Chapel Creek is approximately 2 miles long. This creek is largely undeveloped and is surrounded by marsh grasses and abundant wildlife. Two tributaries offer additional paddling opportunities, Whitehurst Creek near the head of the creek and Bee Tree Creek located near the mouth of the creek.

Harper Creek, located at the 5.3 mile point on the Bay River North Shore Trail, offers a 1 mile side trip into the salt marsh and pine thicket environment adjacent to Bay River.

This trail begins at the Waterfront Park in Bayboro and follows the south shore of Bay River to Day's Landing on Ball Creek. The paddler will cross Bay River and paddle along the south shore of Bay River. Along this section you will be exposed to large, open sections of water which can be affected by northerly and northeasterly winds. This trail is better suited for more experienced kayakers.

This trail begins at the Waterfront Park in Bayboro, follows Bay River to just east of Racoon Island, where you turn south into Trent Creek. From there you will follow the creek past the mouth of Alligator Creek, where if you like, you can exit the trail at the small boat ramp near the head of the creek. If you continue up Trent Creek you will pass the large bridge on NC 55, before reaching the smaller bridge that provides the take out for the trail. The boat ramp on NC Highway 55 is approximately .7 miles from the mouth of the creek. Thomas Creek located on the east side of Trent Creek is approximately .7 miles long.

Alligator Creek offers an additional area to paddle as well as leads you to the Alligator Creek Access on NC 55 west of Stonewall. You can combine the Alligator Creek Trail with the upper portion of the Trent Creek Trail for an approximate 3.5 mile outing in protected waters.

Thomas Creek Trail can be assessed from the Bayboro Waterfront Park, the Alligator Creek Boat Ramp/Bridge Crossing on NC 55 west of Stonewall or at the bridge crossing on SR 1316 at the head of Trent Creek. The length of the trail will vary according to which access is used.

Mason Creek is located approximately 5.2 miles southeast of the access point at the Town of Bayboro Waterfront Park on the south side of Bay River. Mason Creek is also located approximately 2 miles southeast of Bobby's Boat Ramp on Moore Creek. This creek is approximately .5 miles in length and offers the kayakers a safe harbor in the case of rough weather or a quiet place for lunch, while paddling the Bay River South Shore Trail.

Moore Creek is located approximately 1.9 miles northeast of the mouth of Mason Creek and is approximately 1 mile in length. Moore Creek offers sheltered waters for a more leisurely paddle. On the east side of Moore Creek you will find Bobby's boat landing which can be used as an access or take out point along the longer trails.

Little Pasture Creek is located on the south side of Bay River, between Moore Creek and Ball Creek, just east of Bell Point. Little Pasture Creek is approximately .7 miles long and offers a short side trip off of the Bay River South Shore Trail. The Creek is 2.3 miles east of Bobby's Landing and 3 miles west of Days Landing.

Rice Creek is located approximately .2 miles east of Little Pasture Creek and at the approximate 6.4 mile point along the Bay River South Shore Trail. The mouth of the creek is located approximately 2.5 miles from Bobby's Boat Ramp and 2 miles from Day's Landing.
