Trail Descriptions


PP-DA-1     Lower Milltail Creek Trail, 4 Miles
Skill Level: Beginner Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 2-3 Hours
The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge provides the setting for this unique canoe trail. The access area on SR 1103 near Buffalo City is the beginning of the trail. Follow the marked trail as it winds through brackish marshes which are the home to a variety of neotropical birds and migratory waterfowl. The trail is a loop trail that follows Milltail Creek to the Alligator River and returns to the access site. The refuge has provided the signs and maps for the trail. PP-DA-2     Upper Milltail Creek, 6 miles
Skill Level: Beginner Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 2-3 Hours
This trail shares the same access as the Upper Milltail Creek Trail, but traverses further inland into the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge located in Dare County. The refuge is the site of a relocation project for red wolves which now inhabit this area. The refuge has provided the signs and maps for the trail. PP-DA-4     Sandy Ridge Run Trail, 1.5 Miles
Skill Level: Beginner Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 1 Hour
This trail begins at the Buffalo City Access Site and follows the old drainage canal to the narrows of Sawyer Lake, looping around Sandy Ridge in the Alligator National Wildlife Refuge. PP-DA-5     Sawyer Lake Trail, 2 Miles
Skill Level: Beginner Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 1-2 Hours
Sawyers Lake Trail also begins at the Buffalo City Access Site. It follows the Sandy Ridge Run Trail until it reaches Sawyers Lake, where the trail turns north and follows the edge of the lake. Paddle around the lake, return to where you entered the lake, then return to the access site to complete your trail outing.
