Trail Descriptions

PP-HY/TY-3     Alligator River Trail, 22 Miles
Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 12 - 20 Hours
The Alligator River Trail begins near its headwaters, just below the confluence of the Northwest and Southwest Forks of the river. Beginning at an old loading dock, the outing starts on the Northwest Fork of the Alligator River and travels southeasterly approximately four miles to the intersection with the Alligator River. The beginning section meanders through a coastal forest of pines and swamp hardwoods and transforms to a coastal marsh estuary as you reach the mouth of the Northwest Fork. After reaching the Alligator River, the canoeist turns south and follows the river through miles of brackish marshes, remnants of once majestic cypresses, and great forests of pines and mixed hardwoods.

The "grand daddy" of the Albemarle Canoe Trail System, this trail is the longest. However it has several access points and provides an opportunity to do the trail in one outing or break it up into several smaller trips. The river is lined by marshes which are dotted with solitary dead trees which will cause the canoeist to wonder about days gone by.

PP-TY-2     Northwest and Southwest Forks, 7 Miles
Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Time Required: 3-6 Hours
These two tributaries are particularly scenic because of their unusual setting. These two streams offer the canoeist the opportunity to canoe through a "pocosin" type environment which is somewhat unusual. These two streams are fairly deep with depths of up to 30 feet in the main channel. These deep channel pass through groves of hardwood and pine trees and in many places the banks are lined with native reeds beds. The canoeist can paddle upstream to where the stream becomes very narrow and eventually becomes small drains that drain the surrounding forest lands. There is no development along these streams and there are some old boats and log rafting pilings that give a hint of earlier activities.
