Trail Descriptions

PP-HY-2     Lake Mattamuskeet Trail, 10.4 Miles
Skill Level: Beginner Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 4-6 Hours
Located on the Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge, canoeist will usually see a variety of birds and waterfowl along the trail. The trail follows the rim canal for a ways then traverses sections of the lake dotted with cypress trees, some of which contain osprey nests. Other mammals make the refuge home and can be seen along the trail. Lake Mattamuskeet is a large lake and winds out of the north and east can make this side of the lake extremely choppy, therefore paddlers should exercise caution while paddling in the area.

During the migratory season the lake is home to a variety of waterfowl and because the main purpose of the refuge is to offer safe shelter for migrating waterfowl, the refuge is closed to boats and canoes from November to March. When the refuge is closed to boats and canoes, the old pumping station and the hiking and automobile trails located at the refuge headquarters make this a worthwhile destination for the outdoor enthusiast. For additional information on Lake Mattamuskeet call them at (252) 926-4021.
