Trail Descriptions


SC-BR-1     Lockwoods Folly Trail, 4 Miles
Skill Level: Novice/Intermediate Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Time Required: 2-4 Hours
Lockwood Folly Trail begins at the Blue Water Point Marina located at the end of West 57th Place. The trail follows a route southwest towards Lockwoods Folly Inlet. The trail follows the southern shore and passes southwest of a sandbar (more visible during low tide), and turns north towards the mouth of Sheep Island Gut. This small waterway meanders through the marsh for approximately .4 mile and can be utilized as a side trip. Lockwoods Folly Trail continues southwest towards the inlet following the northern shoreline. Near the intersection with the Intracoastal Waterway and the inlet, the trail turns south and follows the southern shoreline back to the intersection with Sheep Island Gut. The intersection of the Intracoastal Waterway and Lockwoods Folly is also the intersection of Lockwoods Folly Trail and Howells Point Trail. At the intersection of Lockwoods Folly Trail and Sheep Island Gut, Lockwoods Folly Trail follows the northern shore next to Sheep Island and crosses to the southern shoreline at the point across the creek from the Marina. Lockwoods Folly Trail is about 4.2 miles long.

SC-BR-2     Montgomery Slough Trail, 7 Miles
Skill Level: Novice/Intermediate Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Time Required: 3-6 Hours
Montgomery Slough Trail begins at the Blue Water Point Marina located at the end of West 57th Place. The trail follows a route eastward along the southern shoreline the first two miles where it then crosses over to the northern shoreline for the next mile and then crosses back to the southern shoreline and intersects with Davis Creek Trail at 3.5 miles. At the intersection of Montgomery Slough Trail and Davis Creek Trail, Montgomery Slough Trail turns west and intersects with the Intracoastal Waterway at approximately 4.73 miles and follows the southern shoreline next to Horse Island. At the northwest point of Horse Island, Montgomery Slough Trail intersects with Howells Point Trail. Montgomery Slough Trail then turns south, intersects with Lockwoods Folly Trail and returns to the Marina. The total length of Montgomery Slough Trail is 7 miles.

SC-BR-3     Howells Point Trail, 6.5 Miles
Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Time Required: 2-4 Hours
Howells Point Trail begins at Blue Water Point Marina located at the end of West 57th Place. The Trail follows Montgomery Slough Trail northward crossing the Intracoastal Waterway at approximately the .5 mile point, then follows the western shoreline of Sunset Harbor for about one-half mile. Howells Point Trail then turns westward crosses Lockwoods Folly River and follows the western shoreline of the river south. Between mile 3 and 4, the trail meanders through several marsh islands before it reaches the Intracoastal Waterway and intersects with Lockwoods Folly Trail. Howells Point Trail crosses the mouth of Spring Creek at the 2.1 mile point, and the creek offers another one-half mile side trip. Near the intersection with Howells Point Trail at its 2 mile point, Howells Point Trail crosses near the inlet at which point it may be safer to beach your canoe and portage across the rough waters of the inlet to Lockwoods Folly Trail. Howells Point Trail then follows Lockwoods Folly Trail to the Marina. The length of Howells Point Trail is 6.5 miles.

SC-BR-4     Davis Creek Trail, 6 Miles
Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Time Required: 2-4 Hours
Davis Creek Trail begins at the intersection of Montgomery Slough Trail and Davis Creek and follows Davis Creek eastward. The Davis Creek Trail crosses under the Middleton Street Bridge at the approximate 1.3 mile point and continues eastward. Davis Creek Trail passes the Long Beach Recreation Center pier at 30th Street East at the approximate 5.75 mile point. Davis Creek Trail terminates at the Heron Park on 40th Street at the 6 mile point.

Davis Creek can be done in combination of other trails such as Montgomery Slough, Howells Point and Lockwoods Folly for a variety of lengths.

SC-BR-21     Intracoastal Waterway/Sunset Harbor Trail
Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Time Required: Variable, plan on 2 miles per hour paddling time
From the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commissions Boat Ramp located at Sunset Harbor, the paddler can access the Howell's Point Trail, Lockwoods Folly Trail, Montgomery Slough Trail, Davis Creek Trail or the Lower Lockwoods Folly River Trail.

SC-BR-22     Lower Lockwoods Folly River Trail, 2 Miles
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 1-2 Hours
From the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Boat Ramp at Sunset Harbor head north up Lockwoods Folly River. At the northern end of the group of islands located off Sunset Harbor, cross the River to Genoes Point, about the one mile point. Continue up the shoreline approximately 1 mile to the boat ramp at the end of Varnamtown Road.

SC-BR-25     Intracoastal Waterway/Holden Beach North Trail, 4.2 Miles
Skill Level: Intermediate Difficulty: Moderate Time Required: 2-4 Hours
From the N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission Boat Ramp located under the NC Highway 130 Bridge in Holden Beach paddle north with the Intracoastal Waterway along the south shore of the mainland. The paddler should be mindful of current conditions as well as their paddling skill as you pass by the mouth of Lockwoods Folly River at the approximately 2 mile point. Paddle through the salt marsh islands on to Genoes Point, where you will intersect the Lower Lockwoods Folly River Trail. Follow the shoreline north to the boat ramp at Varnamtown.

Note: As you paddle this trail be aware that large, fast moving boats use the Intracoastal Waterway.
