Trail Descriptions


SC-BR-12     Dutchman Creek Island Trail, 3 Miles
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 1-3 Hours
Leave the ramp at Sure Catch Tackle and paddle south across the Intracoastal Waterway to the northeast point of shoreline on Dutchman Creek Island, then follow the shoreline in an initial eastwardly direction around the island, returning to Sure Catch Tackle.

Note: As you paddle this trail be aware that large, fast moving boats use the Intracoastal Waterway.

SC-BR-13     Elizabeth Creek Island Trail, 5 Miles
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 1-3 Hours
Follow Dutchman Creek Island Trail until the small island just past the one mile point, paddle southwesterly to the point on Elizabeth River Island, follow the shoreline around the island, cross Dutchman Creek to mile 2 of Dutchman Creek Island Trail, then return to Sure Catch Tackle.

Note: As you paddle this trail be aware that large, fast moving boats use the Intracoastal Waterway.

SC-BR-14     Molasses Creek Trail, 1.6 Miles/Coward Creek Trail, 0.8 Miles
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 2-4 Hours
These two side trails begin at the southeast point of Elizabeth River Island. After paddling around the point, turn southwest towards the mouth of Molasses Creek. The mouth of Coward Creek is approximately .4 miles up Molasses Creek, where you can select either of the creeks to explore. The total distance from the head of Molasses Creek back to Sure Catch Tackle is 3 miles.

SC-BR-15     Dutchman Creek Trail, 4.2 Miles
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 4-8 Hours
Leave the ramp at Sure Catch Tackle and paddle westerly up the Intracoastal Waterway approximately 1 mile to the mouth of Dutchman Creek. Turn northwest and follow the creek to its head. You can make your return back to Sure Catch Tackle or the Wildlife Ramp on Fish Factory Road.

SC-BR-16     Fish Factory Trail, 2.4 Miles
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 2-3 Hours
Leave the ramp at Sure Catch Tackle and paddle westerly down the Intracoastal Waterway, following the Dutchman Creek Trail. At the mouth of Dutchman Creek, continue down the Intracoastal Waterway across the mouth of Dutchman Creek approximately .8 of a mile, turn north up Calf Gully Creek and follow it to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Boat Ramp.

SC-BR-18     Elizabeth River Paddle Trail, 6 Miles
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 3-6 Hours
From the NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Boat Ramp on Fish Factory Road, paddle down the creek, turn south at the Intracoastal Waterway and follow it approximately 1.5 miles, and enter Elizabeth River on the south side of Intracoastal Waterway, just pass the NC 133 Bridge. Follow the Elizabeth River where just past the 4th mile, you will again enter the Intracoastal Waterway. Follow the Waterway approximately .5 miles and again enter the Elizabeth River. At approximately the 5.5 mile position you will again enter the Waterway for a short ways, then follow the Elizabeth River to the 55th Street Boat Ramp.

SC-BR-19     Denis and Piney Point Creek Trail, 4 Miles
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 3-6 Hours
From the NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Boat Ramp on Fish Factory Road, paddle down the creek, cross the Intracoastal Waterway and turn right into Denis Creek. Follow Denis Creek, then Piney Point Creek back to the mouth of Denis Creek, then return to the boat ramp.

SC-BR-20     Beaverdam Creek Trail, 1.2 Miles, One Way
Skill Level: Novice Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 2-3 Hours
From the 55th Street Boat Ramp paddle across the Intracoastal Waterway to the mouth of Beaverdam Creek. Follow the creek to its headwaters and return to the Boat Ramp.
