Trail Descriptions


SC-BR-7     Cape Creek Trail, 5.8 Miles (One Way)
Skill Level: Novice/Intermediate Difficulty: Moderate Time Required: 6-10 Hours
The access for this trail is located on Bald Head Island and is the boat ramp on Bald Head Creek, operated by the Bald Head Marina. From the access site paddle north along the western shoreline to the entrance of Cape Creek for approximately 1 mile. Turn up the creek, take the first right fork and follow the creek to its headwaters. For the return trip, return to the access site or explore any number of other trails that intersect with the Cape Creek Trail.

SC-BR-8     Deep Creek Trail, 5.2 Miles (One Way)
Skill Level: Novice/Intermediate Difficulty: Moderate Time Required: 6-10 Hours
The access for this trail is located on Bald Head Island and is the boat ramp on Bald Head Creek, operated by the Bald Head Marina. From the access site paddle north along the western shoreline to the entrance of Cape Creek, approximately 1 mile. Turn up Cape Creek and take the first large fork to the left, at the 1.5 mile point, which is the entrance to Deep Creek. At approximately the 2.7 mile point you will come to a point where there are three forks in the creek. The right fork of Deep Creek continues on for a total length of 5.2 miles. For the return trip, return to the Marina, or explore the other trails that intersect with Deep Creek Trail.

At the three fork intersection, you may take the middle fork, which is the left fork of Deep Creek for a shorter trip of 3.6 miles. Again your return trip is back to the Marina, or continue exploring some of the adjacent trails.

SC-BR-9     Smith Island Trail, 8 Miles
Skill Level: Novice/Intermediate Difficulty: Moderate Time Required: 2-5 Hours
This trail follows the Deep Creek Trail to the three forks at the 2.7 mile point. Beginning at the forks, Smith Island Trail continues up the left fork to Buzzard Bay and along the western side of the Bay to Cedar Creek. At about the 3.5 mile point you will paddle across the entrance of Cape Creek and continue on to the Marina. The total trail length from Bald Head Island Marina using segments of the Cape Creek Trail and the Smith Island Trail is 8 miles.

SC-BR-10     Buzzard Bay/Muddy Slough Trail, 9 Miles (Round Trip)
Skill Level: Novice/Intermediate Difficulty: Moderate Time Required: 4-8 Hours
The Buzzard Bay/Muddy Slough Trail follows the Deep Creek Trail to the three forks at the 2.7 mile point. Beginning at the forks, the Buzzard Bay/Muddy Slough Trail follows Smith Island Trail to the left. As you enter Buzzard Bay, follow the eastern shoreline to the right to continue on the Buzzard Bay/Muddy Slough Trail. As you pass the 1 mile point in Buzzard Bay begin turning left to enter Muddy Slough. There are several different routes here and the use of topographic maps will help you determine the correct slough. Follow Muddy Slough through the marshes, turning back south at the approximate 2.9 mile point. Paddle along Muddy Slough until you come to the intersection with Smith Island Trail near the mouth of Cedar Creek at the 4.5 mile point. Continue southward, intersecting with the Cape Creek Trail at the 4.9 mile point, then on southward to the marina.

SC-BR-11     Bald Head Creek Trail, 3.2 Miles (One Way)
Skill Level: Beginner Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 2-6 Hours
The Bald Head Creek access site is the boat ramp located approximately ½ mile up Bald Head Creek from the Bald Head Island Marina. From the boat ramp paddle up Bald Head Creek approximately 3.2 miles. At the end of the Creek, turn around and return to the boat ramp or the Marina.

SC-BR-17     Bald Head Island Trail, 6.4 Miles (One Way)
Skill Level: Expert Difficulty: Difficult Time Required: 4-6 Hours
From the ramp at Sure Catch Tackle paddle out to the Intracoastal Waterway and head east towards the town of Southport. Follow the shoreline along the waterfront and at approximately 1 mile turn southeast and head for Battery Island. Reaching Battery Island paddle north, round the point of the Island and continue paddling southeast for a short distance. On the backside of the Island turn east and paddle towards Striking Island. Reaching the Island paddle down the northeast shoreline and cross the False Channel. Paddle along the southwestern shoreline to Muddy Slough and intersect the Buzzard Bay/Muddy Slough Trail at its 3.5 mile point, which is at the entrance of Burriss Creek. Turn south and continue on the Buzzard Bay/Muddy Slough Trail to the Bald Head Island Marina.

Note: Most of this trail is in open water and should only be utilized by those with advanced paddling skills.
