Minors

The Department of Physical Education offers the following academic minors for interested students. Click on a Minor for more information.

Coaching Education

Students obtaining a minor in coaching education develop a foundation of essential coaching skills in a variety of sports areas. This minor requires the completion of 17 semester hours with a grade of "C" (2.0) or better required in each course. There are five required courses representing 13 semester hours. The remaining four hours will be made up of two 2 hour elective courses selected from a list of 11 specific sport offerings.

Fitness Leadership

The Department of Physical Education offers a Fitness Leadership Minor designed to prepare students to assume fitness leadership responsibilities. The minor provides coursework in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and biomechanical principles; prevention and treatment of athletic injuries; development and evaluation of fitness programs; and an opportunity to apply theory into practice through a practicum. This minor requires the completion of 17 credit hours with a grade of "C" or better in each course. Students will be required to show current certification of CPR/First Aid prior to participation in the practicum. There are five required courses totaling 11 credit hours and six additional credit hours in elective courses specific to the student's interests.

Health

The Department of Physical Education offers a 16-hour Health minor that is designed for undergraduate students wishing to pursue careers in health-related professions and for students wishing to gain in-depth knowledge in various contemporary health-related topics for their own personal development. The minor provides students with theories, concepts, and practical skills concerning health behavior and includes a practicum to apply theory to practice.

Outdoor Leadership

The Department of Physical Education offers a 17-hour minor in Outdoor Leadership that is designed for undergraduate students desiring to pursue careers as outdoor leaders of adventure-based programs or for those who wish to enhance their personal development and enjoyment. Students will develop a foundation of essential leadership skills and experience through course work focusing on outdoor skills and leadership training. Students will also have an opportunity to apply theory to practice through a practicum.
