Alcohol & Other Drug Policies

As part of the university’s awareness of drug and alcohol abuse in society, there are policies that govern the use of alcohol and drugs. Pursuant to the direction of the Board of Governors, NC State’s Board of Trustees adopted a policy on illegal drugs.

Alcoholic beverages: The university alcohol policy complies with federal, state and local laws, including those regulating the possession, use and sale of alcoholic beverages and controlled substances. The university is committed to encouraging and sustaining a learning environment which respects individual freedom and promotes the health, safety and welfare of all community members. Emphasis is placed on the responsible use of alcohol.

Illegal drugs: The university is concerned about the threat illegal drugs pose to higher education. The university drug policy demonstrates the university’s primary commitment to education, counseling, rehabilitation and the elimination of illegal drugs. All students and employees are responsible for complying with provisions of North Carolina law, which make the possession, sale, delivery or the manufacturing of controlled substances illegal. It should also be noted that alcohol is an illegal drug for any person under the age of 21. The policy is made available to all students and employees.

Alcohol and other drug abuse education programs: The university maintains numerous programs designed to assist all members of the campus community who seek counseling for drug or alcohol abuse problems. These programs emphasize the incompatibility of alcohol abuse and the use or sale of illegal drugs with the goals of the university; the legal consequences of alcohol abuse or involvement with illegal drugs; the medical and psychological implications of alcohol abuse or the use of illegal drugs; and the ways in which alcohol abuse or the use of illegal drugs jeopardize an individual’s present accomplishments and future opportunities. Programs to assist students are available through the Health Promotion Office, 515-9355, http://www.ncsu.edu/health_promotion/AlcoholDrugs/index.html, while employees should seek assistance from the Division of Human Resources.
