Fire Prevention
In the Office:
Most would not want to help clean up after an office fire. Here are a
few tips to prevent an office fire.
- Know the Emergency phone number 911
- Know where the fire alarm pull station is and how to use it.
- Know location of fire extinguishers and how to use them. Training is available
from Fire Protection 5-2568.
- Use extension cords for temporary reasons only.
- Keep trash and recycle bins empty. This will reduce the amount of material
that can burn.
In the Home:
Being displaced from your home can be a dramatic experience. Avoiding
this can be as simple as following these tips for preventing a home fire.
- Have an escape plan and practice it.
- Make sure fire extinguishers are on every floor and they are charged.
- DO NOT overload electrical sockets!
- Check all appliances and extension cords for frayed or exposed wires.

- Have heating and cooling systems cleaned annually.
- Do not use space heater near combustible materials such as upholstery
and drapes.
- Make certain space heaters are cool before refueling.
- Unplug heat-producing appliances that are not in use, such as toasters
and kettles.
- Do not use gasoline or other flammable materials to clean.
- Turn off appliances when not in use.
- Use the proper fuses in your home. NEVER use pennies, wires or fuses of
higher amperage than required to replace burned out fuses.

to conduct a fire safety inspection of your home. It may be beneficial to have
children assist with the inspections too.
Emergency Readiness
Severe weather can occur at any time. North Carolina residents are often
threatened by severe thunderstorms and tornadoes , and at times even hurricanes.
Being prepared is the key to surviving severe weather. First, know the safe
area to relocate to if severe weather is reported. Next, have ready some basic
supplies to include:
- Water for each person
- Food- with a non-electric can opener
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Portable radio and extra batteries
- Basic first aid kit
- Essential medicines such as prescription drugs
- Once sever weather is reported prepare to relocate to a safe area.
